Had a fun and amazing day yesterday taking one of Roy Underhil's classes at the Woodwright's School in Pittsboro NC yesterday. The class I took was on making the Roubo Bookstand. It was an all day class, and while I did make some mistakes it came out pretty good. The class was a lot of fun, I leaned quite a bit as well. Roy Underhil was an absolute delight to be around. His personality and demeanor is just like he is on his show. He's a very interesting person and just knows so much. Taking his classes, he makes you feel like he's genuinely happy to have you there. So anyway, here's the bookstand I made in his class.
In these pictures we've laid out the pattern and marked where the hinges are cut into the board. For this we used air dried walnut. Ali the work and lay out was fine using had tools from the 1800's or before. Here the board has the location of the hinges marked. Here is the part of the hinges where the wood is cut out using chisels. Starting to cut out the hinges.
Ready to separate the board into halves. Cut out the ogee at the bottom of the bookstand. Staring to separate the board into halves using a crosscut saw. Top side cut complete.
Further splitting of the board. Bottom side done similar to top part. Stand split open and hinged open. Top ogee cut into bookstand.

Took another class with Roy Underhill today. This one was Dovetails and Mortise & Tenons. Another awesome and fun day, taught by the master Roy Underhill. We made a dovetail joint, blind dovetail joint, and a mortise & tenon joint. We started with the dovetail joint. Then moved onto a blind dovetail joint. Then finished with the mortise & tenon joint. Surprisingly, the hardest joint was the mortise & tenon. Sadly, this is the last year he is having the classes at this location. He will be moving out in August, he is writing a new book and he may restart the classes afterwards. And there is a small possibility that his show may be renewed. However that is only a possibility as of now. And he also signed one of the pieces I made today.
