Beyoncé to Remove Ableist Slur From Song ‘Heated’ After Backlash Yeah, I'm going to hell for that thread title. Where is George Carlin when you need him?
Carlin? Probably rolling in his grave at the number of people who misrepresent the things he said while he was alive.
Yep. But in this case, as Carlin said, it's all about context. Beyonce clearly meant no ill will and was unaware that the word had some dark origins. Hell, I didn't even know that until I read the article. Good on hear for trying to make things right, but I do believe there is a certain segment of society (including conservative bigoted assholes, not just leftists) who spend a good deal of their time searching out things to be offended at.
Context also matters though in what effect your words have. If you use a racist slur not realising it is one, then yeah. If you do and then insist on continuing to use it with the defense that you didn't know the first time, then that's different. If she's an artist then she can change her work to ensure it conveys the message she intended it do.
Neither did I. But, I haven't used it since I was a tweenager. I abandoned "spaz" "dork" "dweeb" and "dingus" for proper swear words at 16.
Cuz it's used in context of being said by characters in a story like the f-slur in "money for nothing".
It's supposed to be a short-form of "spastic", which apparently has its roots as a derogatory term for folks with cerebral palsy and the like.
This is stupid. Every word for any kind of disability eventually becomes a slur. Dolt->idiot/moron/stupid->slow->retarded->needing special education->developmentally disabled->differently abled. It was fine, even clinical, to call the people it genuinely applied to “retarded” for like 15 years until kids started calling their friends that when they were being stupid. And then instead of teaching “don’t be mean” we taught them “don’t say that word”, created a new one to be clinical, and then a few years later, some precocious little shit finds the new word and starts using that, and the cycle repeats. Are there problems with bullying disabled people today? Sure. But not because Billy called Tommy special ed because he smacked a bucket and splashed liquid plaster everywhere. And the cycle will keep going regardless. As this gets traction, parents start telling their kids not to say spaz, and eventually they’ll probably call people something new, I dunno maybe “palsies” or something. There’s no word for stupid that doesn’t refer to a prior clinical term for some sort of disability, stupid included (well, there a handful of animal-based ones, *ass* and so forth. But I think equating people to animal status is possibly worse in the long term). Maybe making one could break the cycle, but I suspect it would go the other way too, that the people who do bully the differently abled will start using it on them. Which brings us to adults using any of those terms. It happens. We’re mean creatures, and that comes through in our culture. Art, music, politics, you name it, we can and will be mean. Would the world be a better place if everyone, Queen Bey included, weren’t mean in response to some slight, even in song? If she worked out her differences with I-feel statements and conversations instead of putting whoever it was on blast? Very likely. But it would be a less rich one too.
FF is an insult to actually mentally ill folk. They have no choice. He could have paid attention at school. He wouldn't have shattered any IQ records, but he would have stood a chance. Instead he watched Joe Rogan. And he has shattered IQ records. In the wrong direction.
So do I have this right? An artist decided to make some changes to her own work. She did so because she realized that the original form of the work had the potential to be hurtful to others, and she decided that it was not in line with her personal values. And we're supposed to be angry or disgusted by this because ...?
Aw, aren't you a good little edgy boy, imagine how many high fives you're gonna get at recess for that one!
Look how mature you sound. By your post alone, I'd have guessed a Junior in high school at best, and 7th grade a most likely. Instead, you have a college degree. Clearly it was a collossal waste of time and money, no matter how it was paid for, as you never learned the means to support the arguments you make, and never grew past the tribalism that you wrap around yourself like a lead-weighted blanket. Stop trying to be an edgelord. You come off as an asshole, and not the jerkass-with-a-heart-of-gold variety. In fact, stop reminding me that Rule 8 exists. It's tiring to be reminded of it, because I don't want to invoke it.
I’m sure if it were one of the three or four stooges ( WAB, Fisherman’s Worf, Ten Luback, Faceman) you wouldn’t have a problem with it.
1. They support their arguments. 2. They don't try be edgelords. 3. They fall under the jerkass-with-a-heart-of-gold trope at worst. And, as an aside, I've known Fisherman's Worf for 20 years (damn). He's grown up since I joined Lonaf. I'm not certain I can say the same of you for the near nine years I've known you.
Before long the Republicans -- and, fine, the "Libertarians" -- will be angrily refusing to listen to any music that doesn't contain slurs.
Yes, you knew me when I was an actual teenager trying to be an edgelord. FF will grow out of it some day like I did, unless he's actually an adult right now and not a teenager like he pretends to be. In which case it's already too late. Edit: fuck, has it really been that long man?
Ironically, the music with the most n-bombs is rap. That's gonna make for some interesting RNC conventions.
