his body of work, musically, written, film... Starting from Black Flag and going forward.
Lydon hasn't really done much in the last 30 years of note, and has really never been much more than a contrarian anyways. And yeah... Pistols were pretty much a boy band at a time when amazing shit like DOA was happening here. I'll go a step further that they were also a pop band. I was more into the Clash anyway.

I think you've missed out on a LOT of good north american hardcore then... Check YouTube for entries from "New York Thrash" for instance. Beastie Boys like you've never heard'em...

Hard to say punk's dead when this weekend in onterrible is the 32nd annual Spider-fest, a mix of old timers and new projects. Granted, a lot of the people are and the bands are frequently only one or two original members sometimes playing with one of their kids. Hell, I'm going to see the Exploited in September (providing Wattie doesn't have another coronary event).

It wasn't so much the politics, but I've never really been a fan of mall music-y'know. More into the DIY, independent stuff that you buy direct from the band at a gig because they don't have a distribution deal with A&M or whoever.

on the heels of this, though... a few friends who've done europe trips have remarked that Canadian, and specifically Toronto punks, have a distinctive style that makes us notable from 'merkins... maybe it's a sublte thing like the band patches?

Also, of all places, it seems like Mexico has a pretty heavy scene still... all the plumage of HC'81...

Fair enough! I just like authentic music that comes from the gut, without regard to target groups. I guess that's punk, haha. One man Black Metal Bands are punk af!

When I talk about "punk is dead", I'm not so much talking about the music per se, but about the attributes of rebellion against everything and everyone that are attributed to the style. A punkrocker these days is about as rebellious and scary as a little flower. And while we're on the subject of Rage against the Machine: The lyrics are cool and edgy until you turn 22, then you know that it is all kindergarten.

The music is a matter of taste. I like what came out of punk and hardcore. Sludge, Thrash Metal (D.R.I., Exhorder, Carnivore (!!!)) and even British Goth of the 80s. Purist punk or N.Y. Hardcore like Agnostic Front I find musically just too clumsy and dull. The down-tuned guitars and the heaviness are missing! ;)

We could probably start a side-long discussion here about what constitutes real punk beyond the music, but everyone has their own clichés in their head. So it's pointless! ;)

When it comes to Canada, Black Metal from Quebec is especially popular in my little bubble. They scream in french and sound sublime. And they are quite nationalistic, to say the least, lol. But I don't take that too seriously. These guys have a style all their own. You've probably never heard of them, despite being Canadian. ;)

you might wanna check out DBC if you like thrash/black metal (vs Black Metal-and nope, can't say I've heard of'em)

But yeah, for my poutine punk, I'll take S.C.U.M, Northern Vultures, Asexuals, or even Voivod.

Funny you mentioned DRI in the other post... "Crossover" along with a few others like ANthrax's "spreading the disease" and SOD probably were the final documents of the Lemmy Accords between punk and metal...

I'm not sure rebellion for the sake of rebellion was ever really part of it past a certain age? I grew up around places like Fort Goof here and the basic ideal was to avoid "the grid" more than actually go off of it by simply doing shit ourselves. Even 40 years ago we knew to constructively coexist within the community and they'd leave us to our own device.
