I never hated her and always thought she was correct for ripping up the picture.

    Fuck you Joe Pesci.

I guess you people judge musicians primarily on whether they fit into your political camp. You either think they're great or they're shit, depending on what you think. Oh, Sinead was a rebel and tore up a picture of the Clown of Rome, so let's pay homage to her! How brave of her, one of us, one of us! Or the opposite, let's hate her, she was a childish troublemaker!

Everything is totally polarised. It's so American, it's tragicomic.

Hell, celebrities and pop stars are not opinion makers. Their opinion on life, the universe and all the rest is about as relevant as Joe's at the petrol station.

    'Muricans.

Celebrities have the capacity to build movements because of that very cult of celebrity. Why do you think they get used to make so many commercials? Because they can sway opinion, and it's not just the United States where that happens. There are global superstars who could shit in a bucket and people around the world would drop money for it, just look at K-POP stars for that little bit of surreality.

So when there's a celebrity that uses their public currency for actual good, I applaud it. If they use it to harm others, I condemn them. Until such a time when celebrities aren't given that kind of social currency, it's something I have no trouble commenting on.

Oh, and when Ted Nugent dies, that will be funny as shit, because fuck that bigoted ass Nazi motherfucker.

    And pedophile hebophile.
He bought one of his girlfriends from her parents.

The backlash she faced from tearing up a picture was disturbing, and even all the regular people who got bothered by it showed the huge problem of the catholic church. However, I wasn't really a fan of her music. I didn't want to ban or cancel her like other people did. For me it happened at the end of high school and was one of those huge controversies I thought really should not have been so bad. There was way too much hate over something so small. That indicated she was onto a huge problem with the world and the catholic church. While people were pretending (In suburbia NY) that they were not still in the control of christianity, they clearly were.

The world was full of shit regarding catholicism, and it still is, and it wasn't that she agreed with me, but more that her actions shined a big light on it in people I did not think were that way.

The US mainly exports its pop culture with its ridiculous celebrity tantamum, and the cult of celebrity is a bizarre absurdity. Most of you guys recognize that it's completely bizarre that it's important what Lady Gaga or Ted Nugent have to say about this or that topic. However, you still play along. But their opinion is only one thing, completely irrelevant. The fact that these jokers now have such media and political power is simply hilarious. I could laugh about it, but because the USA exports its culture (there's not much else there), it all spills over to us across the pond.

How about just ignoring the babble of celebrities instead of giving extra power to these disconnected from reality people who live in a bubble of luxury and privilege and are surrounded only by sycophants? They are not your friends. They don't give a shit about you or me.

Anyway, Sinead was great and left her mark in my life with her music.

It's not so much playing along as it is being aware that much of the Western world sees celebrities as something to emulate, as monkeys tend to do. I see celebrities as just people, and yeah, they're people with opinions, but they do have that social power that can be used for good or for ill, and I'd be a fool to ignore that 9000 lb elephant in the room.

I agree with your sentiment, but you do realize US Americans are human, right? They act/behave/react/respond the same way other humans do - despite what WAB believes.

I don't live in the USA and therefore only have the distorted image of the country that is conveyed to me by our media. I am well aware of that. I know that you don't all pray in the church of the Kardashians. ;)

The whole drama surrounding the tearing of the Pope's effigy, the ghastly social role of the Catholic Church in Ireland and other social issues are one thing. And to be honest: I am a fan of Sinead, but she was a very confused, torn person. You don't have to and shouldn't take everything she said at face value.

But all that came after Sinead wrote her best songs and lyrics. No one could see inside her head, but in my opinion her music is strongly influenced by her mental illness and traumas. And less by political struggles and controversies. "Fire on Babylon" is probably about her abusive mother, just as an example... she was a girl in her 20ies.

In the end, it's about the music, the songs, her voice. That's what remains. Not the crappy Pope picture. Most people will remember her because of the pope thing, which is sad. Nevertheless, I will blast "drink before the war" until my neighbours know the lyrics by heart, too!

Her music did not touch me as deeply as others. That is not to say her music should not touch others, but that it just simply did not fit into whatever is in my head that forms a bond with music. I heard her emotional state was a struggle for her, and so many people hated on her for what she did in that one moment. At the time in my life it was one of the prominent examples of the troubled nature of some performers. It is probably one of my first instances where I got sick of the haters who probably never gave a crap, but pretended they were so invested.

That is part of her legacy for many. I guess it is sad that so many people never knew her library and probably only know her for one song and the picture incident, but that is music. That in and of itself is a reflection upon our lives, and is why we need the input of all sorts of artists even if we do not personally get thrilled by some. Someone elsewhere is finding their work to be profound or fun.

I did appreciate the view she showed me even if it wasn't her music.

    via an old friend:

She has been called a blasphemer, heretic, atheist, and the devil.
I think what many people don’t know about Sinead O’Connor was that she was actually devoutly religious.
Raised Roman Catholic, she was betrayed by the church, and subjected to trauma and abuse. Even still, her faith was such that she became an ordained priest.
When cast out by society for telling the truth about the church as she saw it from an insider’s perspective, she sought answers in different religions. Always seeking to find peace and acceptance, looking for a place that stilled her tortured mind.
Sinead studied Kabbalah but ultimately decided that she could not convert to Judaism. Later, she embraced Rastafarianism. She finally found Islam and died a devout Muslim.
Sinead approached each of these religions by fully diving in. Her practice was never halfway – in each religious path she followed she was fully orthodox and unwavering.
When, years after being shunned for speaking out against the abuse within the Catholic church - banned from TV stations, booed by crowds, abandoned by management, cruelly used as a punchline and punching bag – it was proven that she was telling the truth all along, I didn’t see SNL inviting her back on air, record labels making public apologies, people capable of changing their long-held incorrect assumptions of her, or the church thanking her for her courage and acknowledging the pain they had inflicted on her.
In this day and age, society as a whole is only now learning to believe victims.
Still, almost every tribute I have seen to her has led with Nothing Compare 2 U. A collaboration that she always claimed included abuse towards her on the part of Prince. I wasn’t there and I have nothing against Prince. But, I believe victims.
And, there can be no argument that at minimum, Prince’s estate had been horrible to her in the years since his passing, even blocking the use of the full name of the song to be used in a recent documentary about her.
She doesn’t need to be known for another person’s work - certainly, her own songwriting prowess was only paralleled by her glorious voice.
So please, when paying tribute to her, give her her long overdue credit and showcase a song SHE wrote – put the money into the pockets of HER estate. BELIEVE AND SUPPORT THE VICTIM.
Because make no mistake – society killed Sinead O’Connor and society will continue to kill our most brilliant artists if we refuse to believe and heal the trauma that contributed to their incredible art.
From the first moment I heard Troy, I always believed in Sinead and never turned my back on her. Over the years when describing her, my summary has always been “Sinead IS truth”.
She was funny. Oh my goodness was she funny - like only someone who has experienced deep pain can be, I believe. The first time I saw her live, I left with my sides hurting from laughing at her humor as much as my eyes hurt from crying over the sheer magnificence of her talent.
Of course, she was stunningly gorgeous, with those vulnerable emotive eyes you could drown in and a smile that could blind you to anything else. She could have rested on her looks and allowed herself to be molded into a pop tartlet. Instead, she shaved her head in defiance, wore baggy clothes, and removed her looks from the equation as much as could be possible with the face of an angel.
She was such a beautiful artist and person, it made me ache and will always continue to.
Rest in power Queen, and may your legacy be a kinder, more accepting world for victims everywhere.

^Holy hell, I am a fan of her three first albums, I really am... she was great. What a voice! Genuine and raw emotions.

    But this...

Lol... A little too much of an honour.

Is this malicious satire? No, society didn't kill Sinead. This is pure nonsense. That's corny baloney... Sentimental outpouring... Take a break!

Stylising this woman as a victim of society shortens reality and also deprives her of her dignity posthumously. This outpouring is probably well-intentioned, but it backfires badly. I say this as a fan.

The only reason she got banned after the picture ripping incident was because American tv is funded by sponcors. They must not be offended as some of those who purchase their products might be devout Catholics. She was condemned by the power of the purse. Hanged by the strings of the money bag.
