So it turns out that registered users can delete their posts months and years in the past. I have temporarily disabled that because holy shit. Instead, I have set the time limit window to 30 minutes. That allows for time if there is a double post, or if someone posts something and regrets it before anyone else has replied.

Also, users have unlimited edit time for their posts. I've also changed that to 30 minutes.

Now, there's nothing I can do about the edit tag, at least on the surface, as that seems to be ingrained in the software somewhere, and I would have to dig to find it. But I will look into it.

That said, if you want these changes to be permanent, or if you have a preference for a better time limit, let me know. Otherwise, I'll revert them.

Just trying to think through things where NOT having unlimited edit time might be a problem.

We have that one post that's always edited to keep the name change log current, but I think it's an administrator updating that anyway.

Are there other ones like that?

Once I become Head Football Coach and start running for higher office (first Arkansas local school board, eventually President - I have a plan) I’ll want to be able to edit/delete my old posts.

    [edit] Oops, wrong account.

I can't think of one. Anything that requires long term editing is handled by admins anyway.

Can't do anything about the X-minute limit, but I've removed the checkboxes.

Speaking for myself, I edit when I noticed really wonky spelling or grammar errors on my posts. :clyde:

Same. Sometimes I only notice a really bad spelling or grammar error after I've hit post.

Since this is A Topic and also seems resolved should we release it now?

And if so should we edit O2C’s ‘ posts where he discusses the code and says *delete me before releasing* and do so and replace that part with :technobabble: ?

FFS. It’s an internet message board. If you’re that worried about a post you made 10 or 20 fucking years ago, you shouldn’t be posting here anyway.

Are we seriously changing the functionality of the board because some whiney little shit made an accusation?

No, a user managed to quite accidentally highlight a glaring flaw in the post system, and it was fixed as a result.

Dayton reported me for posts around 15 years old and expected warnings to be issued. He's a special kind of idiot

I am wondering about the edit time on posts because it seems I can still edit posts that were made a while back. There is a legitimate reason to be able to edit an old post. I am thinking a good example is the Pile thread which maintains a running list of those accused of sexual misconduct in the first post.

I get some people might go back to nefariously edit a post, but does that happen so often with such consequences that we really need to end that ability for everyone over a couple of complainers who seem to remember things differently than they happened? This isn't a court of law, and our arguments are not that important that such tampering is a huge thing.

Also, couldn't staff restore the old "evidence" in a post and then remove a specific users ability to edit their posts if the need arises? I would imagine if a moderator was found to be acting in such a pattern it would be obvious to other mods and they could remove that moderator's abilities to do such things and restore the previous versions?

Let us not correct a problem that simply is not happening based on some paranoid ramblings from members who will never be satisfied there is not a conspiracy theory against them. I think most of us recognize the mods here are pretty decent.

The pile thread lets you add posts, so nothing is really affected there. This is more about someone making a claim, or surreptitiously editing something they said years ago so it looks like they didn't say it, and while that may not seem like much, we've had the odd shit wagon who was obsessed with older posts, like Dayton3 was, and this fixes that. It may not seem like much, it may seem pointless, but mods and admins don't routinely go through old posts looking for edits, so it's something that could be missed.

For example, suppose you really hate someone's guts, and you know their real identity? You could go back to a post from years ago, add their real identity to it, and leave it. All of those posts get indexed by Google. So it's more just being as secure as possible, and cutting off avenues of malfeasance on a board where people really love to get up to some truly petty shit sometimes. During the Rep Wars, there were posters going back 5+ years to neg rep people, for no reason at all except to be petty little shits.

Changing the edit time to 30 minutes seems more than reasonable, all things considered. No one needs to go back six months, a year, 10 years, to edit a post, and if they truly do for some odd reason, asking a mod is easy. This was a flaw that needed to be addressed.

I had not considered you could bury a dox deep within the archives. That makes sense. It is a minor loss anyway, and we could always just ask.

As for maintaining the List in the Pile... I gave up on that about two years ago.
