This was a lot stronger premier than season two. I don't remember much about season three, but I do remember liking it better than season two. This reminds me a lot of Fargo and season one of True Detective. So far, so good.

Yes, S2 is best forgotten. It's so bad compared to S1 and S3.

I'm looking forward to this one a lot because Jodie Foster is awesome.

Season 1 was good until I realised that all of the best bits were plagiarised. Didn't bother with it after that.

So did anyone see ep 1 yet? Good characters and great setting so far. Jodi Foster is great! Kali Reis plays an Alaskan native police officer and I really like her character so far. I think I'm on board for the entire run.

I liked the first episode it reminded me of The Thing in a way as well as Fargo. It should be interesting to see how this all plays out. The only thing that I found extremely distracting was Kali Reid’ cheek piercings.

Episode two brings the actual detective work I want to see more of in The Batman sequel. I love it.

Ok… Jodi Foster’s character is an asshole. The actress is so charismatic that I didn’t notice it at first, but anyone who disrespects someone’s culture in their own house is terrible. I think I know what the root of her derision is but I want to see a bit more before I say it. I will say that she seems threatened that she might lose her adopted daughter to the indigenous tribe.

Evangeline Navarro is played by Kalli Reis. When I first saw her, I thought she might be a cop turned actor from the way she carries herself but it turns out she’s a former champion boxer.

I’m really digging the setting and the overall “creep” factor to this season. The isolation of a small arctic Alaskan city is perfect for a supernatural mystery.

I wanna know why she adopted that girl. I think it might be she had a partner that got killed and she adopted her. I mean cop partner not a sexual partner. Kali Reid really sells the reverse misogynist role as a cop. I’ve known women that are like that. At the same time it’s funny the interactions she has with her fuck buddy. Poor dude can’t catch a break. Lol. As for the quasi supernatural stuff, I hope they explain that in rational terms because True Detective isn’t the X-Files, it’s supposed to be more grounded.

It's been a while, but I remember there being some creepy unexplained elements in all seasons of True Detective. am I not remembering right?

    So…
Since it’s been so long and I find myself very eager for the next episode of Night Country, I decided to start a rewatch of season 1 to see if I got the “supernatural elements” of this show right. I’m about an episode and a half through it and 2 things have jumped out at me thus far.

    1. That freaky spiral tattoo that appears on the victims in Night Country appears on the very first victim in season one. Holy shit! What if these cases are connected?

    2. Matthew McConoghy’s (sp?) character is named Russ Cole. He was raised in Texas, but he’s from Alaska. His Dad still lives there. The ghost that led the creepy lady to the corpse-sicle is named Travis Cole. What if that was Russ Cole’s Dad? If that symbol is so old and from Alaska, why didn’t Russ Cole recognize it when he saw it in Louisiana?

This tells me that this True Detective story occurs in the same universe as the first one and the Night Country case is possibly linked to the first in a big way. I’m gonna keep watching S1 to see if any more clues pop up.

IIRC, wasn’t McConoghey’s character schizophrenic? Later in the season he says something like he kept seeing things “I saw [something], but I know now it wasn’t really there.”

Russ Cole's hallucinations seem to be a product of his LSD-addled mind. I'm on Ep 3 of S1 and he admits to going on a bender after his daughter died and as a consequence, he sees things from time to time. As far as the "supernatural elements" I mentioned earlier, I believe that this will be explained away as a "Scooby-Doo" ish mystery at the end. I don't have a good memory of S1 or 3, but I remember seeing some trippy stuff. I have no plan to rewatch S2, but I'll let you guys know what I find regarding the others. I'm really intrigued about the appearance of the swirly symbol from S1. I'm starting to think the inclusion of the ghost of Russ Cole's Dad is just a coincidence and won't have any further impact on the story.

I believe the whole plot is sort of like a Scooby Doo episode. The higher ups are trying to protect the mine and they're using the cult as a way to scare people off. The difference being that the cult is actually real and the woman that works for the mine is the same woman that the scientists were afraid of. Perhaps she's the cult leader? The scientists are looking for some kind of gene or something that prevents aging and the cult was funding their research through the mine company. I think the water is poisoning people and that's why people are hallucinating and seeing "ghosts". Anyway, things are getting real serious real quick. This definitely shaping to be as good as the first season.

Well, that's all she wrote folks. I'm satisfied with a shorter season because it wasn't drug out. This was a nice six hour long movie that told a short, simple detective story with a satisfying conclusion. I don't think it needed more episodes for this particular story, but I am sad that it ended so quickly. I think Jodi Foster deserves an Emmy for this.

Not bad… I like how the ending was left just ambiguous enough to not be clear if this was a completely rational ending or if there was indeed some supernatural elements involved.

It seems open & shut on the surfac but there’s a few questions… how was Annie K’s tongue found perfectly preserved 6 years after her murder? Is Navarro dead at the end and is that her ghost standing next to Danvers at the end? Or did she really go missing and Danvers is the only person who knows where she is and she’s choosing to lie to investigators?

All in all, I found this season to be really enjoyable. I hope I can find another show to get into before long.
