Smith, Pilot Ronald McNair, Mission Specialist Ellison Onizuka, Mission Specialist Judith Resnik, Mission Specialist Gregory Jarvis, Payload Specialist Christa McAuliffe, Payload Specialist, teacher Nichelle Nichols felt extreme guilt for years after the death of Ronald McNair. She recruited McNair in 1978 as part of a NASA program to increase the number of minorities and women into the space program. Also Ellison Onizuka and Judith Resnick were also recruited as part of the same program

We were told that the shuttles were going to be launching weekly and that space flight was going to be so cheap that all of us could go. In reality, they couldn’t even launch them monthly. That was a sort of thing for people of that generation and whiteness. One set of my grandparents called themselves brother and sis. After watching The People under the Stairs and noticing a uncanny similarity between the couple in the movie and that set of grandparents we actually had to ask. The answer was no, but I really do still wonder a bit to this day.
