Me either. And I really don't get that people are more scared the further away they are from it.
UA is screaming about that shit in fucking Nebraska.

I heard racist horseshit from family members all my life growing up, and it never took root.
So the "they were raised that way" thing doesn't work with me.
Something in them WANTS that shit to be true.

I think it comes from the security most people feel in familiar environments, and their fear of the unknown. The people who seem to suffer from it the most seem to be people who are hometown people who never really get that far out of their bubble. It is the whole invasion idea, and losing their comfort area and becoming foreigners where they had security.

I cannot say I have been worldwide, but I have been to areas where I am an obvious outsider in america. I have learned to be comfortable there, and just because I am not local does not mean I cannot socialize. I also have mostly been the person who is not part of the local in crowd. When I was it was often part of what I was doing to make others feel welcome there.

This is not just an american thing, this is a human thing. most people experience xenophobia to a certain level, and if you always retreat to your comfort zone it is very scary to deal with the idea you will be replaced in that zone. It would probably be especially scary for a person who has little respect for themselves and no strength in themselves like UA. He knows he is a worthless shit, and why the fuck would an outside invasion need to deal with him at all? I have been surrounded by hispanic people speaking spanish. Despite people's opinions of how awful I am, I know that I will meet people and learn how to talk and have fun with them. Some of them may hate gringos, but if you respect them and don't demand they come to your island you meet people and get along.

If you are xenophobic and an asshole who people only deal with when they have to because you are a townie with a place, then it is going to be terrifying when a supposed invasion of people with their own friends and systems might replace you.

This is the best immigration deal we are going to get with this House and this Senate and this Trump dominated Republican Party/conservative media ecosystem.

And the worst parts expire in three years (while the extra visas expire in five years).

Only way to get a better deal is to accept this one now and then come back later.

Good news is that the majority of Americans and even Republicans support the stuff that the Dems want and put in the next deal. And we’ll have taken the ‘first fix the border then we’ll fix the immigration system’ inanity (Hey Bob, why is the border an issue in the first place?) off the table.

On the flip side Ukraine can’t wait. Taiwan can’t wait.

What an utterly contemptible bill. Apart from all the shit about the border, it forbids the US government from ever again giving a penny to UNRWA, the main organisation keeping Gazans alive. And gives Israel $14 billion more to kill them, no strings attached. Shocking.

Same reason people in the country are way more terrified of city crime than people who actually live in cities.

Night after night of Fox News screaming MASSIVE URBAN CRIME WAVE! only works on people who don't have the evidence of their own eyes to rely on.

Canada’s immigration system is stricter than ours, FFS. The Republicans don’t want a deal that allows a certain amount of illegal i migrants in before we start enforcing the border. The goal should be zero.

This isn’t a constitutional amendment. Meaning the idea that this bill freezing disbursement of PAST Congressionally authorized funding yet to be disbursed (but that at any moment before putting pen to paper Biden could disburse) in any way impacts any future congressional funding is laughable.

You are literally swallowing the MAGA chum whole my friend.

You know how in the United States you overcome a law saying ‘We will never pay for X item ever again!!! Ha-ha!’?

Two minutes later you pass a law that includes funding for X.

    That’s it.

    That’s the process.

I’m not being flippant here. There is no law Congress can pass by a simple majority that a future Congress (including itself) cannot supersede.

No special procedure. No different vote total. It just needs to be signed into law AFTER the law it is modifying.

Those special kinda laws that can’t be immediately superseded are called amendments to the United States Constitution and they are a bit trickier to pass.

All that to say I HOPE the Dem negotiators ‘allowed’ some kind of totally non binding language that idiots would assume actually means something to be included. I hope there are ten of them and I hope it took a lot of blood sweat and tears for the Rs to wring those concessions out of them.

Thats some fucking smart shit. :techman:

A common example of Congress getting around laws that they enacted is that they’ll take some large budgetary expense that couldn’t be applied to the current year’s budget and say that it should be applied to the previous year’s budget. Nobody cares in 2024 if you slap new spending on 2023’s budget.

I have actually gone to both Canada and Mexico and going into those countries was much easier than crossing the border into the US. You really do not have a clue what the fuck you are talking about.

I hear the only hurdles with crossing into Mexico are having Mexican car insurance and paying insurance to the Cartels if crossing the Rio Grande on I-110 in El Paso.
And that crossing back into the US can be a bitch.

Okay, so while you might be technically right that a law could be passed at any time to override this one, what are the chances of that happening in say, the next year, under this Congress? When it matters. Because the effect of this is to turn what could have potentially been a few weeks suspension which could be reversed before the effects were felt into an indefinite one.

It’s not just Fox News. I mean, yes, Fox’s only contribution to news does seem to be fearmongering. But, I have lived both. I was 7 when we moved out of Detroit’s suburbs to small towns and lived on farms. But, by the time I was 16, I was back in city life down in Texas.

I’ve live both in the city and in the country. And when I used to exercise and go for long walks either in the city or in the country, I never felt vulnerable having my headphones on while walking in the woods, but I always left one ear bud out if I was in the city.

    The executive suspended it.
Without this law, they can unsuspend it easily. (And there has been speculation that they might.)
With this law, they must pass another law if they wish to do so, which will be very difficult.

Is that not the case? Happy if I'm wrong.

I'm conflicted about the border/aid bill that the Republicans bailed out on.

On one hand they entirely played themselves in service to Trump and if Dems are at all competent this year (they will be in some races, not in others) they basically gave up the ONE policy position they had left to run on and they look very much like the clownshow we already knew they were on the one thing they claimed to be the answer to (since the economy is becoming a non-issue for them)

    This is good.
McConnell is now talking about going back to doing an aid bill that doesn't address the border - which is hilarious given that even he admits that it was the GOP that demanded it be paired with a border bill - and if we can get money to Ukraine (even if it means you have to put up with money for Israel that they don't deserve) without the compromise bill that's massive.

    BUT

It is rightly pointed out that Murphy is saying flat out "The Republicans told us what to do and we followed to the letter" in route to designing a bill that is in many ways Stphen Millers 2017 wet dream - conceding the moral high ground on almost all the issues at stake to the Republican frame and are not going about saying "we were super willing to do hard right bullshit for the Republicans if they would just let us" which, goddamn people SNAP OUT OF IT.

As Julian Castro said, you CANNOT be harsh enough on immigration to satisfy Republicans or make them stop saying "open borders!!!" so QUIT TRYING and stand for good policy.

So it's good the shitty bill isn't going to pass but what a fucking backward ass way to get here. If Murphy et al say "We were so desperate to save Ukraine that we bit the bullet and sacrifice a LOT of policies we don't like on border issues because sometimes lawmaking is ugly and messy. But since the Republicans don't know how to take yes for an answer, they should know that those draconian policies are now permanently off the table."

    But...they aren't.

The Executive suspended What and When?

This bill (not a law, do you understand the difference? For real. Not a gotcha. Legit question do you know the difference between a bill and a law?) would suspend the disbursement of priorly allocated federal funds unless/until a new budget is passed that allocates funding to UNRWA.

[Up until he signs it Biden can disburse every fucking previously allocated dollar to the UNRWA. Like for real people are you not reading the bill or don’t understand how things work? There is 99+% chance this won’t affect anything. It is fucking MAGA chum. Fuck. Why are we talking about this. The Tererun-UA-Jenee sitch really is the model throuple of WF. I should have never clicked Show Ignored Content, how do I escape…]

So… AT NO POINT IN THE FUTURE, TODAY, TOMORROW AND EVERMORE can the USG send money to the UNRWA until next year’s budget where they get to decide whether to send money to the UNRWA…

Fuck. How did I not realize how the Dems completely and totally capitulated.

You will never be harsh enough on immigration to win over someone who knows who Steven Miller is, what he looks like, sounds like has read him.

You can make the moves so that independents don’t have you at -50 on immigration/border.

You can do something that you aren’t -20 WITH DEMS on immigration/border.

I certainly don't want to gargle MAGA cum, or chum, or whatever. No, I don't have a full grasp of the legal intricacies here. Just taking what I'd read at face value which seemed to include comments to this effect by the state department. I'll dig it out later.

So first off for a variety of reasons the speaker of this speech can fuck right the fuck off.

But FUCK! we aren’t just talking about some rando ‘RINO’ this dude was the leader of the Republican Party and a two term President that got his VP elected after him which is extremely rare.

Can you imagine anyone on the right side these days saying something like this?
