Yeah, and I don't really care if the oligarchs (because that's who it is in buying up the land) succeed in their suit. In fact, given the kind of money that they can throw around, I'd be surprised if they didn't. (Buying judges goes along with these kinds of deals, regardless of if the people selling the land are conspiring against the buyers or not.)

Perhaps not to you, but since I'm facing a similar situation where I'm going to be gentrified out of my beer can in a few years (if I'm lucky, if I'm not, it'll be a few months), my focus is a little different.

I don't know, maybe because we've got a SCOTUS that doesn't seem to give two shits about precedent and the like?

I like the sound of the idea, but I see problems with it on this small scale.

You have to want to live in that area, and it has to last forever. If something happens to your neighborhood, or you change you are stuck. If you do not have a car, you will be stuck into that bubble. That is great if your city doesn't take a turn away from you, or you do not find yourself on the fringe of their in crowd looking for some socialization. It sounds like they are building a suburbia city and not a city city.

How do you move out, especially in high priced california, if you are not rich enough to afford a second residence while you try to sell a limited home? It is great to have a nice suburban city with everything around and public transportation, but in a suburban system you really limit your target market to people who get jobs within your public transport area, especially if you start limiting access to cars. when you do not have a macro public transportation system you end up like the villages in Florida. That is great if you are retired and your next step is senior assisted living, but not if you are a 30 year old who might want to live somewhere else and now has to sell their home to a very niche buying base because you are stuck within the boundaries of your hometown.

Ya know, I think we may need to hold on there for a moment. I mean, the city does sound great, right? Maybe not a self-sustaining enclave or anything, but certainly a place that wasn't necessarily reliant on outside services for most things. Okay, but who's going to be able to afford to live there? Oh sure, it'll be tech bro central, so it's not like they'll have a shortage of people wanting to move in there. But how many of the folks who work in the shops and restaurants there will be able to afford to live there? Or will they have some kind of deal that so long as they work for Starbucks, they've got an apartment in the city? And you know, there are all those tech bros who think that we don't have any hope of saving civilization, so they just need to save themselves, and the people who work for them that they think they need. I'm not saying we're talking about feudal kingdoms springing up after the fall of the Roman Empire or anything. I'm just saying that if we taxed the billionaires a little bit more we could all live in cities like that if we wanted to.

I do not know how far away from an air force base you have to live to not be disturbed by it, but that looks like it might be a wee bit to close. Maybe those big jets do not fly all the time, but I have been on the highway under one when it was taking off and I thought my car was going to be destroyed. I have played paintball scenario games near one, and it became real annoying real fast to be deafened when the jets flew overhead. Much worse than commercial airports if the base is active.

Why even bother with california? It would be much easier, cheaper, and private to do this sort of thing in a flyover state and then make a deal with utilities while setting up a nice little airport or rail line to an airport. Cali has all the problems with water, weather, and earthquakes.

If you got the cheapo farmland in a place like AL you could position next to someplace like Birmingham. They you drop some cash on the local comcast or TWC to run fiber from their network, make your own train hop, and set up your private bus route with your own busses. then you gate the place and fuck all the locals while setting up your own private town police and government. Then you just build whatever office facilities and manufacturing you need and hire locals to do the shit work while you have your own water, power lines, and communications.

Not to mention Birmingham has a ton of great fun to have if you want a city environment. There is some casinos that are pretty nice. If you really need some culture or a big airport Atlanta is quick to get to especially if you set up on the east side of Birmingham.

I know cali has a better zip code, but if you really want this private area without the hassel of the local regulations getting in the way go to a red state and get rid of your taxes too.

Earthquakes are a feature, not a bug.
The water and weather... those are bugs. Introduced by us, no less.

AL has no regulations, and I hear if you frack enough you can bring those earthquake features to AL too.

What is so great about california land that you cvan't do this shit in a place that will let you do whatever you want for a lot less money? The only thing Cali has is brand recognition, and that is always a fucking problem with those who own the brand.

I just think they really want to do it at all. They just want to say they are doing it to scam some idiots out of money, and they put it in california because then you need the most donations. If you were serious you would do it in a better environment, with no real regulations, and where you can pretty much own the local government without all those pesky left wing Karens fucking with you. If you are going to wreck the environment for some rich elitist assholes, do it in AL, or another state with dirt cheap land and politicians.

So if I had enough money I could buy the town and make all of the residents into a human centipede as long as I pay off enough members of the country legislature?

SWo the argument is that it is OK for the company to co-ordinate to buy the land at the lowest possible value, but if as an individual I talk to my neighbors about the people trying to buy our land and we agree to hold out for more money that weare in the wrong?

I am sure we are all doomed to fight the corporations on our own because they own the government.
