TN Republicans want to ban it.
Talk about handing the Democrats a golden opportunity:
"My opponent wants to ban the sale of cold beer! I want to require all beer to be kept at 33 degrees!"

I guess if they're trying to crack down on drunk driving, getting rid of pre-chilled beer that's drinkable on your way home from the store makes sense. Probably better for the environment too, since less energy is being wasted keeping the beer chilled for however long before it's purchased. :chris:

Anyway, here's a tweet from Ted Cruz calling Democrats "nanny state authoritarians" last year. :bergman:

    (2) Ted Cruz on X: "Dems are nanny-state authoritarians. Personally, I don’t smoke cigarettes, but if you choose to do so, it’s your damn choice!" / X (twitter.com)

Oklahoma has something similar to this or at least did 20 years ago when I’d visit a girl at Stillwater.

Gas stations could only sell cold 3.4% beer. For anything higher you had to go to a state liquor store and buy hot beer (if they were open).

While I find it completely absurd and something the prude straight edge fascists should not do, it also does not effect me and anything that takes up their time trying to regulate the bedrooms, gender, color, or whatever serves a purpose. Warm beer seems to be the least awful things these idiots the TN people elect do.

So maybe warm shit beer will teach them not to elect these idiots who want to govern everything you do.

If cold beer is stopping your drinking you probably don't have a problem not drinking at the proper times. I just figure if you sell an alcoholic beer drinker warm beer to fuck with them, they are probably going to need a beer to deal with the warm beer you sold them. you are sort of triggering the drinking response by stressing the addict.

This is why you do not have prudish tea totalers try to do these things because they have to make up shit in their heads as to why people drink beer.

Apart from anything else, will this not mess with the shelf life of the beer? Does beer go off quicker if kept warm?

I still do not understand the problem with skunky pisswater, but I think it is supposed to stay at a stable temp. I really do not see any chemical reason a canned liquid without bacterial presence would really be altered by a few degrees of temp change over the course of a few months or years, but some people are sensitive.

I would call it picky for no reason.

Okay, I realize that the Irish are better known for this:

Than they are for beer, but surely you know that your limey oppressors like the stuff warm?

The truth is that a lot of it has to do with marketing and the yeasts involved. Apparently, the Brits (and anyone else who likes their beer warm) used a yeast that floated, while the Germans (and the rest of the civilized world) used yeast that sank to the bottom of the vat. Meaning that you could make beer all year round, unless you lived in England. There, in the winter, the tops of the vats would get covered in ice, so the yeast stopped making beer, and you wound up with basically crap (imagine thinking that you're getting Coke or Pepsi, only it tastes like bread). Thus, the Brits made the stuff in warmer months, so liked it warm.

Now, fast forward to 'Merica in the 1970s. We're still dealing with things like the aftereffects of Prohibition. Not only are there areas where you can't buy alcohol, but there are also areas where certain types of alcohol are banned, or not available. For example, in Ohio, not only were there "dry" counties (places where you couldn't buy alcohol in any form), but even if you could buy beer, it was so watered down that you'd have to drink at least a six-pack of the stuff to even feel any of the effects. At the same time, Coors beer wasn't available east of the Mississippi river.

Why does that matter? Well, you see, that made it a "valuable" commodity to roughly half of the US population. No shit. So much so, that it became one of the inspirations for the movie Smokey and the Bandit.
So, in the 1980s, when Coors decided to expand their availability, they hired one of the sexiest guys on TV to do ads for them, and tout how the stuff was kept cold the entire time.

I can't find it, but I can remember commercials with Mark Harmon saying that if you saw Coors not being refrigerated, you should immediately call a toll-free number to report it. A decade after that, Budweiser came out with Bud Ice, and the commercials featured people in a frozen warehouse, dressed like they were in the movie Blade Runner, talking about how Bud Ice was "cold-filtered," etc.

In short, warm beer doesn't really have a shorter shelf-life than beer that's kept cold but don't expect anyone in the US to think that warm beer is okay.

Interesting. But as someone who tends to like the beer in England more than that in Ireland (or America), I think what you mean by "warm" and "cold" might be a little relative. You guys do your best to keep it as close to absolute fucking zero as you can manage it. Coors Lite might give you frostbite but that's probably the best way to avoid having to taste the stuff. English beer is usually lightly chilled.

I always thought it was the preservatives in crappy north american beer that made me feel like shit the next day? But yeah, you can't drink that shit above 5-10C...

Normally I drink imports (which for some reason are cheaper a lot of the time) like Holsten or Tyskie, or regional independents if I'm having beer. I've actually become quite fond of vodka seltzers lately... White Claw doesn't over do the flavouring or sweetness.
