Apparently it's a law against breeding deformities in dogs, but seems like it's affecting many breeds, including beagles even :marathon:

It is outrageous that we cannot breed living mops that suffer through a lifetime of pain and problems because we want something we think is cute when it whimpers and shakes.

We breed these dogs because we feel pain is cute and beautiful.

Well, that rules out Scottish Folds, Manx cats, Sphynx cats, and dwarf cats like Grumpy Cat.

yeah, like pugs, the cutesy features of dachshunds have been selectively bred to the point that the animals are suffering for it.

I don't have a problem with this at all.

I doubt it passes. It should. But I doubt it does. I know at least one pharma company that has manufacturing in Germany that uses beagles for testing. I also know those dogs are well treated.

Big pharma is not going to allow this to pass. Unfortunately.

then again, I never would have believed the state of Illinois would allow marijuana legalization for the same reason (lots of big pharma have corporate offices in Chicago), so what do I know?

In fairness to dachshunds, they were bred to be badger hunters and the long bodies served the purpose of going into their burrows to chase them out. That one wasn't just a vanity deal like pugs and Boston Terriers (the latter of which can't even give birth naturally).

Anything that will help put puppy/pet mills out of business is okay with me. :brood:

Unfortunately, this won’t affect puppy mills at all.

“Designer” dogs are not found at puppy mills. Puppy mills sells puppies for a couple hundred dollars.

Designer dogs are bred and certified and have pedigrees and sell for thousands of dollars.

If you didn’t pay thousands of dollars, it’s a mutt.

oh, I know that... but the vanity thing happened to them too

although that too is a big part of the problem-they're a hunter breed that's been domesticated into an accessory.

I miss this over priced beast...
    sunnysnuggle.jpg

kind of a less common breed so it's more selective breeding than custom with the pedigree (ain't nobody gonna try and make a Briard-oodle  probably huge devalue in the doing of)

The breeders insistence that the laws against breeding dogs with cruel defects will affect them seems like them telling on themselves.

Mutts are where it's it. We have a Labrador/Border Collie Cross and he's a good boy.

she was the best... super smart, too.

it didn't take very long to teach her to sit automatically at a curb before crossing a street.

I have heard that breed is easily trainable.

My grandpuppy (Rocky) …. Is as stubborn as I am. I’m certain he’s a mutt, too. But mostly pit/boxer mix. He only learned enough to get what he wanted. Entirely too soon treats were not enough for him.
