Sleep deprivation for 180 hours as per what @RickDeckard posted, yeah, that is torture. A couple of nights? No.

Equally, I can't even see the benefit of keeping prisoners awake. I had a couple of weeks of sleep deprivation, I was woozy, un-coordinated and confused. I was also not a good source of information, not unless you were asking where you could fuck off to, that I could answer easily and at length.

That is just asking for a legal payday - in the UK not having the PlayStation they've broken fixed inside of 48 hours would be getting dragged into court as an 'annoyance'. Yeah, I have to put that under one of those "not thought through" things.
