My grandmother has never been able to ride a bicycle due to inner ear/balance issues, but she always says she wishes she could ride. I was wondering - would she be able to ride on the back of a tandem bike? Or does the backseat rider have to have balance skills as well? I think it'd be great to rent a tandem the next time we're visiting each other, but I certainly don't want the experience to be traumatic.
I don't have a lot of experience with tandems, and what I do have is entirely as the front rider. If you are a competent cyclist, with a strong core, your balance alone should be sufficient. At least that's the sense I've had, but it's probably a lot easier if the rear rider can also help.
A tricycle sounds like it might be a better option, provided that I can find a place that rents them out.
Years ago I saw tricycles in Sears, in the bike sectio, for adults to ride, & the sign said/stressed: DON'T RIDE AT NIGHT. Are adult sized tricycles more treacherous after sunset than bicycles for some reason?
They're probably slower/less maneuverable and lower to the ground than a regular bicycle. Besides, riding on a bicycle at night isn't a very good idea anyway.
