Kennedy got his head blown off.
Johnson was elected in '64 and got us suckered into Vietnam and knew there was zero chance of being re-elected, so he declined to run.
Carter wrecked the economy.

Other than Carter, Clinton was the first Democrat president since FDR to even run for re-election.
