They already have all the authority they need. What they lack is permission to enforce the law instead of orders not to enforce it. Take illegal immigration, for example. It's illegal on paper, and the INS has the authority to deport those who are caught. In reality they just bus or fly newly arrived illegals to their chosen destinations. We might as well give the police the mandate that they have to help burglars with robberies by having them use their paddy wagons to act as a moving service for other people's stuff.
