There was a long time when white people painting their faces and imitating black people was the leading form of popular entertainment in the United States. Some have theorized that this dynamic is the origin of of all that has been considered "hip" or on the cutting edge of pop culture. It's a complicated history, and any blackface performance that doesn't acknowledge it is probably not going to succeed.
http://black-face.com/ blacks performing in black-face sounds weird but not really when you think about how things were back then.
Huh. I never heard anything negative till the last 15 ish years. Now I have personally cringed at the black face stuff from early cinema, as it wasn't just black face but also portraying blacks as less than whites, which is stupid. But chapel doing white face is funny as hell. I guess I see it as a two way street. Not sure when I realized the double standard. blacks making fun of whites is funny as hell. Whites making fun of blacks in same manner is funny as hell, but don't laugh it's not cool.
Pretty much it. It's always funnier when the "under dog" gets one over on the bully. I have a great idea for a comedy schtick - an obviously "whiter than white" comic (but in black-face) does a routine acting like a black comic making fun of whites. As a white comic nobody could fault me for making fun of my own culture - because whites do some stupid (but admittedly funny) shit from time-to-time. But self-deprecating humor can only go so far - you can never punch yourself as hard as somebody else can punch you. Thus the jokes and comments would be funnier coming from a (pretend) black man because he's "sticking it to the man". Damn this is fucking GENIUS!
I don't blame autism for being a racist. I've posted at fanfic boards with autistic posters well before Aspergers became shorthand for toolshed and with one notable exception, the majority of them were good decent people that didn't use their illness as an excuse to be a twat.
You're allowed to laugh only at people whose socio-economic status, as a group, is greater than or equal to your own. (Nevermind if this attitude reinforces the social stratification.)
Maybe white people do not have to make fun of black people because we can laugh along with the black comics like Chappell who do it all the time?
Refusal to resign and then play dumb and hide behind technicalities when caught out doing something seriously wrong or fucking up, and school inability to get rid of demonstrably poor teachers would seem to be an inherent problem in the Arkansas education system. Now admittedly my knowledge of AR teachers is limited to a small sample of two, but hey. It's 100% hit rate!
No one's said it's intrinsically offensive, it's historically offensive, and this guy was holding up a black lives matter sign with misspelled words, not exactly a neutral or positive portal is it?
