Okay, the last time I saw something tied to vampires that I really liked was the "Monsters!" episode of The New Twilight Zone that aired back in '86 (Blade doesn't count, since the main character wasn't really a vampire). But Anne Rice? Twilight? That other thing, and that other thing? Yeah, not really my bag. This, however, has my interest. The video does have an NSFW warning because several characters use the word "fuck" at different points in the trailer.
Fright Night? Lost Boys? The Hunger*? Cronos? Only Lovers Left Alive**? *The Hunger has David Bowie and lesbian Susan Sarandon! ** Tilda Swinton!
Only saw parts of it. Don't see how it really shook up the genre. 80s camp that was kinda mid when I saw it for the second time in the theater in 1987 and is now best remembered for this Notable because hot, lesbian sex wasn't a thing in mainstream movies in that era. In terms of hot, lesbian sex in mainstream cinema (or slightly mainstream, since this movie got slapped with the first NC-17 rating) Henry and June has it beat by a mile. I mean, you've got a barely legal Uma Thurman having lesbian sex with Maria de Medeiros, who is multi-ethnic. Never heard of them, and not inclined to check them out if you think that Lost Boys is somehow really remarkable.
Jesus, I didn't say any of them are Oscar bait. Just memorable and popular. I'm not a telepath, I don't know what ones you've seen. That's why they had question marks.
Go reread the OP. I never said anything about Oscars or popularity. I said that this was one of the few times that I, personally, found a take on vampires to be interesting.
Fair enough. Those are the different takes I could think of. Everything else is pretty much Dracula. I guess there's also "Near Dark" but you probably hate that one too.
The Tarantino film? Haven't seen it. Not really a huge fan of his work. Tried to watch Pulp Fiction, but when it got to the part about jabbing the needle in Uma's heart, little too close to reality for shit that I've been through. Kill Bill Volume One? Not bad, but knowing that he's got a foot fetish and nearly killed Uma in that film? Not cool. Death Proof? Okay, Star Wars was intended as an homage to the cheesy serials like Flash Gordon, but with modern SFX and storytelling, whereas Death Proof was like making a shot-for-shot remake of the 30s Flash Gordon serials, so why should I care? And I'm a goddamned car guy with a really squishy spot in my heart for Chryslers, but if you're gonna make a blood-and-thunder car movie that focuses around a Chrysler in the 00s, at least update it like Lucas did. So, you know, give us something like the various Mad Max movies, not like that shitty remake of Psycho in the 90s.
