I've heard this movie compared to Ultraviolet a lot, and I can see why. This had to be by far one of the worst movie's I've ever seen. That said, since it's so often mentioned in the same breath as Ultraviolet, I'll do a comparison. Story: Believe it or not, the premise/story was actually half decent. Most of humanity wiped out, the guy who discovers the cure builds a sanctuary city and takes over the government along with his brother. But the side-effect of the cure was sterility, so humanity has to be cloned to continue. As a cure for sterility is developed, the brother gets power hungry, and the first guy, along with a clone of his wife originally sent to assassinate him have to stop the brother's ambitions. Unfortunately, if story was all it took to make a good movie, Attack of the Clones would have been a cinematic masterpiece. Plot: or should I say "plod". That's about what this movie did. On the plus side, it was at least a TINY bit more cohesive than Ultraviolet. Action: Ultraviolet wins here by a mile. The action was nonstop, which is what I expect from a mindless action flick. Visuals: an overall different (more toned down (this is a good thing) )look from Ultraviolet, but some of the effects sequences (pill-to-stomach-to-brain-to-weird-white-place-with-the-lady-with-the-freaky-red-hair) could have been pulled right out of UV. Why that one chick had hands on her feet, I'll never know, but I suppose it made for a good special effect when she got stabbed by all the razor-grass. UV gets the nod for style consistency. Moral of the story: Life finds a way. Much more overt than Jurassic Park's take on it. Certainly a moral of the story at all is preferable to Ultraviolet, which had none. However, it took a really, really, long time to get to this, with several false-positives, such as "power corrupts," along the way. Leading lady: Milla Jovovich in Ultraviolet wins hands down. Long story short, both are B-movies at best. While Aeon Flux has a better story, Ultraviolet is a much better action movie. Aeon Flux does most things a bit better than Ultraviolet, but all of those things are mediocre at best; it's a jack of all trades, master of none. Ultraviolet at least had the mindless action part down pat, and it's enough to offset the story, or lack thereof.
Yeah, you had to be a fan of the cartoons to get a bit more out of it. The "slow plodding", and mysterious philosophizing were trademarks of the animated show. As were weird touches like the hands for feet lady and such. Peter Chung based a lot of material on his dreams, and one of the extra layers of the show was you were never sure if it was "real", or not, as it followed dream logic a lot of times.
I watched it after so many people mentioned in my ULTRAVIOLET thread. It's a lot better. It's enjoyable on the same level STEALTH is: brainless entertainment. Completely forgettable but not offensive either. ULTRAVIOLET was an insult.
Each movie effectively kept me numb and comfy in my recliner for 90 minutes each on two separate days of my Christmas vacation. I didn't ask any more of them, and they didn't give any more. Square deal.
