I have put up for discussion on Starscape a fascinating article on a court case from the U.S. Virgin Islands where a retired U.S. Marshall is challenging the loss of his right to vote in U.S. Presidential elections.

It's a case that raises fascinating historical issues relating to the U.S.'s colonial history and it raises some fundamental questions about our judicial system.

I'm not worried about it. He can vent all he wants, just not where he is right now. ;)

As for Mike's thread, I highly recommend it. :D

It looks like you put Trinity in its place. Are you going to warn him or ban him?

I was hoping to do neither. Sometimes it doesn't work like that though.

I tend to agree, but all we can deal with is the persona that goes with the screen name and this one ain't pretty.

This "Trinity" has been putting on this gay act for quite a while and strikes me as a particularly nasty type of troll, one willing to hijack someone else's screen name in an effort to get attention.

Borderline psycho if you ask me....

Agreed. If Trinity is here and would like to deny the existence of the persona on Starscape, it would go a long way to me understanding the profile on the board right now.

Until Trinity here talks to me, Trinity there is going to be temporarily suspended. I need to know, just so I don't have any kind of porn attacks or garbage on my board. I will explain this also to the Trinity there. Because I was quite shocked when that Trinity started complaining so much. We've had our disagreements, but never like that. In fact, the posts are more like what KIRK would post. I'm not saying that's him, just that it's not really like Trinity.

    EDIT:
Um, I change my mind. It is KIRK. It's been confirmed by two sources. Ironic.

Yes, the Trinity over there is a bit of a poltroonish character. I might say other things about the Trinity who posts here, but not that.

It appears Trinity of WordForge that you are owed an apology. It's hardly our fault that someone is apparently using your name to advance their own sleazy agenda, but I do wish to apologize for considering for a moment that such a twit might really be you.

Agreed, Trinity. You, by the way, are most welcome to join the board. I am vacating that name to you, if you so desire. Please email me if you would like to do so.

I disagree, Baba. I don't think he is. Quite the contrary, I think he's a capable person who has skills and qualities, even if he does not show them on the various message boards. In any case, I'd rather not discuss the incident anymore on the board proper.

Reminds of how people like Eccentric will go completely out of their way to pick a fight with someone (Ecc being my buddy one day, then callimg me a diphist and flaming me for months when I said I was happy to see Polarslam and Face banned this past year comes to mind), and when they finally tell them where to shove it, they have the nerve to play the fucking victim.

J Allen, I have to admire your class when dealing with that 'tard. I would have just ripped out the claws a long time ago and told him to shove off.

I hate to be a necro, but I have to wonder... why should USVI residents be able to vote in Presidential Elections? The President is the the president of a union of states, of which the Virgin Islands are not one, not of the people.

All the US colonies would need to be made states in order to grant their people the right to vote.

Fair question. I don't really see that as the main issue, though. I think what's more interesting is that there is a body of law regarding U.S. Territories that many of us might find hard to swallow.

This raises the questions of whether judges should always follow precedent, even if the precedents are reprehensible by today's standards or should they engage in "judicial activism" and start a new chain of precedents based on today's sensibilities.

Thank you for the on topic post.

Being a non-incorporated territory excludes you from presidential voting rights, believe me around these parts people would love the ability to vote for the president but if you're not a state it ain't gonna happen. If any of us living in a US territory want that right we can move to any of the 50 states, live there for three months, and wait for the next election. Sucks, but that's how it goes. But it begs a question. How come the US VI aren't a state already? Unlike my own home territory they seem to be quite Americanized and happy to be part of the union.

You raise an interesting point, however, I think it has something to do with the threat of "double taxation." The current tax system they have is the same as the mainland U.S. but the USVI gets to keep the money instead of funnelling it to the IRS.

If they were to become a state, the citizens would still be subject to that income tax and no doubt a new assortment of taxes and fees to pay for services the income tax is currently paying for.
