So much for the taquitos I was gonna make :garamet:

Set the oven to 405º to preheat it, go upstairs while it does its thing. Acrid smell starts going through the house, start to get suspicious as the preheat chime goes off. Probably left the cookie tray in there again, fucking annoying as I was going to use it for the taquitos.
Smoke detector goes off as I open the oven... she put a fucking oven mit that was now smoldering on the cookie tray in there! With the pizza cutter behind it whose handle's melted to hell and back.

People with very tiny kitchens and not enough cabinets often keep cookware in the oven. The oven mitt, though... :jayzus:

My room mate likes to store cookie sheets in the oven, that aren't cleaned very well, and if I forget to take them out it results in smoke. It's not a huge deal because I've gotten used to checking for dumbassery before using things, but it is mildly annoying.

No they don't. On a gas oven the drawer at the bottom is a broiler. On an electric one it's a warming tray. Neither are meant for storage.

Kitchens typically have cabinets, those are for storage.

That's not universally true...at all. I have Samsung double built-ins that do many things. They even connect to the bloody wifi. But, there is no "warming tray."

I have a lot of pots, pans, skillets, etc. At least 18, but probably more. So I have to store them in the oven. But I know that they are there, so if I need to use the oven I know to take them out. I have cabinets, but I have more stuff in them that I probably need. Maybe. One cabinet is full of spices, oils, seasonings, etc. that I use for cooking. Them another that is full of dishes and bowls, a couple that have boxed, canned, and dry goods in them (cereal, rice, pasta, sauces, canned foods), another has glassware, another has assorted stuff (coffee, teas, baking goods), another with storage containers. And then 3 crockpots/slow cookers, a bread machine, two hot air fryers (one I bought the other my sister bought, never used and gave to me, and haven't used yet), a One Pot, a deep fryer, a rice cooker, a waffle maker, sandwich maker.

I actually use all of the gadgets except the hot air fryer my sister gave me. It's kind of on the big side, and never have needed to cook something big enough use it. It will hold a whole chicken, or even a small turkey. The three crockpots/slow cookers are different sizes, so depending on what I'm making I'll use a different size. I've considered down sizing and getting rid of some stuff, but I do use all those on a fairly regular basis.

And on more than a few occasions, if I end up making Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner, I'll use about half of those gadgets. One f he guys I work with, we talk about all sorts of stuff, one of the things we talk about, or more precisely, he asks me about is cooking. And I'll tell him what I've had and made for dinner. One time he said "You're a fat kid on the inside.".

Forgot to mention when I posted this, I also have about 30 different hot sauces as well, different cuisines/regions depending on what type of food I'll put them on or use when cooking.

By the way, I laughed at this feature when I first got it. Then I realized how useful it is. I can activate or deactivate the oven remotely. You know the old cliche of taking a long trip and asking, "Did I leave the oven on?" Doesn't happen any more. I can also scan the bar code of an item at the store and when I get home, the oven is preheated and the timer is set. All I have to do is pop it in and let it go.

Tell that to every poor person's house I've been to

(In all seriousness, I grew up w that as secondary storage and I didn't know any different until I got into the Navy. Now, I invest in detachable pans so everything can go into the cupboards.)

It's also useful if your power goes out and you have to be at work or somewhere. Just not on the oven though, but also lights, thermostat, cameras, etc.. As long as it's something that you can remotely use or activate through wifi, you can tell if your power is back on.

Thank you. My grandmother moved from a railroad apartment with a kitchen and a dining room to a one-bedroom with a kitchen that was maybe 7x10. IIRC, she had two upper cabinets on either side of the sink, period. Stove and sink took up the bottom wall. There was a Formica table that could fit six if you pulled the leaves out. She kept her cookware in the oven because there was nowhere else. For her that was a luxury. Where she grew up there was a woodstove that doubled as heat and cooking, and four kids sleeping in one bed.

Liar! All ovens are the same!

Drawers aren't even a real thing.

    Ovens don't exist either.

If it makes you feel better @Bickendan , two weeks ago I passed out (had been drinking ) while making ramen noodles and it burnt up and my neighbor called the fire department and they busted open my door. Nothing was on fire, but the apartment was filled with smoke which they had to get rid of with a giant fan. I have to pay for the replacement door which isn’t cheap.:brood:

I grew up with small kitchens and little cabinet space. There is always cookware in the oven. It is just natural to check it when you turn it on. Of course, I would never put something in there that was not capable of being baked or broiled. A lot of bakeware was just too long or oddly shaped to fit in a cabinet so the oven just made a good place to store cookie sheets, pizza pans, and certain steak cooking trays.

Easy solution to the problem is to make a rule that nothing that can melt or be destroyed by heat be put in the oven for storage. The worst you get if you forget to check the oven is hot bakeware which can cool.

I remember my grandmother once bought burner covers for her electric stove. They looked nice and were great for about a week until somehow the burner was turned on while the painted metallic cover was on there. My grandmother thought no one would notice the spiral burn mark, but we mocked her enough so that she threw them away and never bought them again. It was a tough family lesson, but a really stupid lesson to put anything on the burner that was not meant to be there.

DUDE! That’s what, one DUI (or more?), one almost drowning and one almost death by smoke inhalation.

Have you considered rehab? As someone who has been to rehab I ask not as an insult but honestly. It sounds like you have a real problem and could use some professional help.

That's why I always prepare my snacks before I get drunk and/or high. Cuts down on risky cooking situations.

But yeah...if you're passing out from drinking on the regular...odds are you may have a slight problem.

My stove has two ovens, a small upper one and a larger lower one with a convection function. No storage drawer. I sometimes store flat pans in the lower oven since I almost never use that one. :clyde:
