Ever since SP3 came out, I've noticed some instability in my PCs. At first, I figured that some of the hardware was causing me problems, but when both machines began exhibiting the same problems, I figured that it had to be a software issue. Malware scans all come up clean (using a couple different programs), so I don't appear to have any nasty programs running.

The specific problems are somewhat varied. There will be times when my machines appear to have their processors hammered, but nothing unusual is running, or I'll get "half crashes" where a program loses functionality to a degree and even closing the program, bringing up Task Manager to clean up any parts of the program which might have been left in memory doesn't fix the problem when I relaunch the program. The only thing which corrects it is to reboot the PC.

Most irritating is that the one program which seems to have the highest "half crashes" is a Microsoft program! (The software for my Microsoft Trackball.) Grrr.

I'm not at the "it sucks as bad as Windows Migrane Edition" level of pain yet, but it's damned close. I used to be able to go months without rebooting my machines, now I'm rebooting almost daily (and one of them BSODs on me at least once a day, it seems). I'm not rebooting the boxes to get some kind of minor functionality back, either, but simply to be able to use the machine in the matter I normally do. (i.e. run a browser [Opera, possibly Firefox as well, depending upon what I'm doing], iTunes, and OpenOffice at the same time.) Some times just running one of those programs will overstress the box, whereas in the past, it could handle all of them easily 99% of the time (or if there was a problem, just killing the program which was acting up and relaunching it would fix the problem). All of them are up-to-date and properly patched, so if there's some kind of compatibility problem, its not one that anybody has provided a solution for.

Anyone know if there's a specific element to SP3 which could be causing this and if it can be safely removed? Or am I just SOL?

Nope not had any problems with my system.
All i have noticed is that it's added an extra 2-4 seconds on the system bootup. (but that might be the bf2 i just reinstalled)
