I watched most of TNG for the first time on a shitty little black and white tv because my parents were watching something else and it was the only other tv in the house. I definitely didn't prefer it, but I have some good memories of watching black and white tv.

I wonder if you could even buy a black & white tv anymore. If you can it probably costs more than a nice flatscreen. I remember when I finally knuckled under and got a DVD player. It was getting so it was impossible to buy videocassettes any more so I had to get one. I was flush at the time so I decided I was going to get a good one. I was a bit disappointed that DVD players were, like, under $100 or somesuch.

Apparently makeup techniques for actors had to be completely overhauled when colour broadcasting came in, as in the black and white days the makeup was intended to produce that contrast you talk about, giving very garish results in person.

A lot of the B&W had a film noir sense to them... The Untouchables. The Detectives.. others like Lucy and the Honeymooners so iconic.. I do not think I would enjoy them in color. the Honeymooners really only had one set.. a couple adjunct when needed, but mostly the Cramden's apartment. It suitd the life they portrayed.
Ed Sullivan and American Bandstand were as good in B&W as they were in color and actually I liked the format of bandstand when it was from Philly much more then when it got glitzy.
Gunsmoke, Tombstone Territory, Rawhide all worked in B&W, and until TV began to use more on-site locations the "sound stage" productions didn't look much better in color.
