I have a DV camcorder with a DV output, and a firewire cable.

I've tried taking it in with windows movie maker, but it is, in a one-word summation, SHITE. Worthless save/export options, dropped frames all over the place, screws up the colours, etc.

So... anybody recommend a program for this kinda thing?

My son would - he makes videos with a setup as you described. When he gets in I'll ask him.

Oh, God. WMM is the WORST video editor. Works fairly well on a new computer, but after you've had it for a year or two, it just starts going bonkers and crashing up. I made three minute video that took TWO WEEKS to complete simply because I had to re-boot the program even fifteen minutes.

I got a prog from a reply to the same thread on trek bbs and it works fine for me. Here it is if you're wondering: WinDV. Pulls in dv and dumps it in avi format in a folder of your choosing. No dropped frames or such like issues with it so far.

I use this in combination with Xilisoft 3GP video converter which is an amazing tool. It can convert just about any video or audio format there is to just about any other format there is, and also resize them etc. as well.

This is my first test result, pulled from camcorder at 720x576 PAL and dumped as avi, converted with xilisoft to about half size and mpeg 4 format, (which also reduced it from a couple hundred mb to about 12 mb), and uploaded to youtube:
