That’s cuz the Nick Fury he was playing was based on the “Ultimate” version of the character, which version is based off of Samuel L. Jackson! It’s basically a huge inside joke.
I've never been a huge comics fan, I've read various Marvel and DC things, and haven't paid too much attention to what's happened over the years, but I can remember when I saw something that had Nick Fury as being black, I thought that it was kind of strange, until one of my friends, who was a big comics fan said that they'd modeled him after Samuel L. Jackson, and I was like, "Okay, that's pretty cool." I'm not a huge fan of either Nick or Samuel, but Nick was always a badass character in the comics, and if you're going to model him after a real-world person (or the persona that such a person projects), I can't argue with using Samuel L. Jackson as your model. I mean, seriously. Jackson knows how to play a bad ass, and if you want him to be Nick Fury, or any of a number of bad ass characters, I'm not going to object too much.
I don't know. In doing some googling, it looks like my knowledge of what was going on in comics (Marvel or DC) basically ended in 1980 when it comes to established characters (see the Avengers issue where they fought Red Ronin). There was a Green Arrow glossy mini-series that I bought in the late 80s, Gonad: The Barbarian and Cold Blooded Chameleon Commandos that I picked up the odd issue of. I should point out that at this time, I was in college, living with people who were friends with folks now considered to be seminal in the whole "furry" movement. Not only have I met Vicky Wyman, but I was close friends with the guy who was going to base an opera on Xanadu. So, I've got some serious freakshow cred as well. Last I heard, he was in prison in Canada because he got caught trying to cross the border with illegal images of the kind that Epstein would like, on his laptop. But that is yet another story.
right up until the whinging over Idris Elba playing Heimdall... (yeah... fandom's whinging, not night funky's)
I don't think he meant you in particular. I think he meant fandom in general. I do seem to remember some small commotion about Idris Elba playing Heimdall. I don't remember it being a huge deal, but I do remember some people complaining.
It was odd casting. Heimdall, in the myths, is "the whitest of the white" and casting a black actor in the role was bizarre. I would have made him Hogun the Grim and given Hogun a bigger role in the Thor films.
I don' think "master bedroom" should be a troublesome phrase unless the same house also has a "slave quarters." Then that might need some lookin' into!
I seem to recall it as "brightest" rather than "whitest"... with "golden" and "glittering" coming up. Guess it depends on the translation you're using... Gold always made more sense given the rainbow connection and cultural cross pollination with the irish.
