Houston Chronicle starts a multi-part series on how the SBC has been covering up sexual abuse by church leaders. Lots more at the link.
Organized religion serves three purposes, regardless of faith (Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Shinto, Zoroastrian, etc.): Get power Make money Fuck bitches (either women or boys) Anyone who tells you any different is either a naive idiot trying to sell you on organized religion or is trying to accomplish one of the three above. (note this is not a condemnation on personal religious/faith practices)
Leading up to and during the Civil War most major faith communities split over the issue of whether it was right or wrong to own people. After the war, when it was clear to most people that it was wrong to own people the Northern and Southern branches of these communities eventually reconciled. The Southern Baptists never reached this conclusion and never reconciled with their former coreligionists.
I was raised in a SB church, it’s utterly toxic even without the horrific sexual abuse. I got out as soon as I could, it left me with a very jaded view on religion. It’s probably not fair, but they really burned me on the whole concept.
https://www.wrdw.com/content/news/Local-pastor-arrested--505601941.html Not to steal your thunder Tuckerfan, but Aiken is very much local for me. Granted I don't know if this church is Southern Baptist or just plain Baptist but regardless - if true, the fucker needs to eat a bullet. I swear 56 years on this planet and I just cannot wrap my mind around how a church can look the other way and blame victims and worse yet (and I think it's a crime but I'm not sure) not report these rapes to the proper authorities! THERE MAY BE MANY "GODS" BUT THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE LAW! Are we or are we not "a nation of laws?" I don't give a fuck if your Muslim, Jew, Christian, Hindu, etc etc etc your ass better follow the laws of the US and the state in which you reside, full stop! If you as a church leader have no conscience or moral compass and choose to tolerate sexual abuse (or practice it yourself) you do not have the option of saying god is your authority! If that were the case Texas (for example) would have an unlimited amount of differing "authorities" under which people function. Bangkok Atheist is right about his 3 purposes idea. Truly this is one area where the left and the right are very much in agreement! Sexual abuse of minors is some horrific & evil shit and it's actually being promoted by the very people who are certified & authorized TO SAVE OUR SOULS! And this is being done not by weirdo fly-by-night religions but by some of the oldest, respected and most powerful churches on the planet!
Oh, there's already stuff trickling out about both of them. Especially the Mormons. They haven't had their big "Spotlight", moment, but they will.
"It's a porous sieve of a denomination." Of course it is. It's in the name. For practical purposes, we can call the SBC a denomination, but it's actually a convention. Each church is autonomous and independent. One of the "Four C's" of modern Baptist distinctives is "Cooperation." We voluntarily cooperate on missions with our local Baptist Association, which in turn voluntarily cooperates with the Alabama Board of Missions, which in turn voluntarily cooperates with the Southern Baptist Convention. Another C in the "Four C's" is "Congregational." Each church sets its own policies, procedures, by-laws, constitution, form of government (with all of them being Congregational in nature), and each church decides their own doctrines. That's how you end up with a church like mine adhering to the 1843 New Hampshire Confession of Faith, a church down the road adhering to the 1689 Second London Baptist Confession of Faith, and yet another church down the road adhering to Semi-Pelagian Arminianism. But, we're all "Baptist" by creed and confession and we all associate voluntarily with our local Baptist Association. Edit: And, for the record, the churches are handling this in their own way. Paige Patterson was rightfully ousted as President of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary last year for mishandling an abuse allegation and comments he made encouraging a woman to stay with an abusive husband. Of the 17 people from Alabama mentioned in the article, one is dead. Eight are currently in prison and eight are either in prison or are registered sex offenders in other states. Hardly a "cover up."
a lot of the big wigs are saying (as they did in 2008 "But what can we do? Autonomy and shit" And yeeeeet....let a church call a woman pastor and they know exactly what to do.
Just as a side point, Independent Fundamentalist Baptist churches are, by all accounts, the worst of the worst on this issue. So not being SBC wouldn't really matter.
Think that statement through for a second. Doesn't the fact there are "black churches" and "white churches" give you pause for thought? And yes, there are From wikipedia: So essentially the SBC not only resisted the abolition of slavery, they're still resisting the abolition of segregation.
thank you! Good to know I'm not the only crazy motherfucker who thinks a Hawaiian pizza is pretty awesome!
You've stumbled upon one of my hot button issues. There should be no such thing as a "black church" and a "white church." We are just the church. This is a problem that goes far, far beyond any denominational lines and it pokes right at the heart of American culture. Any church that doesn't accurately reflect the socio-economic makeup of the community it serves is in a dangerous place. That said, I'm forced to be pragmatic because of the reality of the situation. We have partnered with a historically black church across town as sister organizations. We did that because, unfortunately, there are people they can reach that would never give us the time of day and there are people we can reach that would never give them the time of day. On a lighter note, they've asked me to preach one of the nights of their conference this summer. Their Senior Pastor, knowing my heart, asked me to preach on Christology in a series about getting the fundamentals right. When I asked about the time frame he said, "Oh, just try to keep it under 2-1/2 hours."
Segregation? Voluntary association. Maybe forced bussing can work this time? Or hypnotize people about the wrongness of their thinking? Government fixes will do no better than even the best meaning individual grappling with half-truths on an internet discussion board.
What, you don't find yourself more comfortable hanging out with others who've failed ? Associating with others you find similar is just human nature. [for the grown ups, don't misunderstand that by identifying a reality that I approve of the implications]
