http://www.latimes.com/news/nationw...re-kills-at-least-90-20130127,0,5053804.story Jesus. It looks like the club was massively overcrowded and didn't have clearly marked exits. A band on stage shot off a flare which set the roof on fire, and the panic started instantly. I've been in a few packed nightclubs in my earlier days, and I can totally see how this could happen. How horrible.
While I doubt most people would have heard of the Cocoanut Grove Fire, its not like The Station fire was all that long ago, or not a global story.
I immediately pictured what starts at the 6 minute mark in this clip. [YT="Rave Club - Man on Fire"]bPS5WFxanHU[/YT]
That is definitely one of those, I don't wanna think about it, situations. But that doesn't mean I haven't plotted escape scenarios in crowded situations before.
This is a tragedy. RIP to those people. Why did they only have one door and massive overcrowding though? It's known by now that this regularly leads to huge numbers of deaths in fires. In most countries there are laws about this. Also, it's Bush's fault.
Didn't they have a similar incident in the US a few years back? Some band set off pyrotechnics in a club which ended up burning the whole place down killing hundreds.
Any time I'm in or near a crowd, I take note of possible exits, as well as routes that will ensure a clear path in the event of a panic. It's a terrible thing when this happens. All because someone is irresponsible and/or stupid.
Nightclub fires will have to be registered first. It's only the reasonable and responsible thing to do.
Whenever my wife and I go to a movie, I make a note of the exits and make a quick count of how many rows of seats there are until you get to them. My wife says I'm just obsessively paranoid.
Some reports are saying that the only way in or out of the building was locked when the fire started.
That is fairly typical behavior at lots of "entertainment sites" where they make all their money on late night events. They are so crazy about people sneaking in without paying that they ignore basic safety.
To which the only reasonable respond is to look at her all wild-eyed like and go, "What do you mean by that?! Who sent you?!"
Reports are that club security had locked the other doors. Even if the doors had been unlocked you would have had massive deaths because the club was massively overcrowded. I wasn't able to find any pictures to post here but video I saw last night showed a mass of people (still alive) trapped in a door. They had literally fallen on top of each other trying to get out the door and they got stuck. With crowds of people pushing towards the door those people stuck in the door themselves were unable to stand up and get out. Their bodies literally became a door itself preventing everyone behind them trying to get out. Most people are killed by the toxic smoke. I want to know why it is these bands think it's cool to light up fireworks inside of clubs.
