Yeah I think this is going to be a swift kick in the nuts to AT&T. They get to pay the price for not investing in a better network
Huh. I was looking to upgrade when my last phone gave out but it would have cost me an arm and a leg to upgrade due to still having a few months before the contract expires. I figured I'd just pick up a cheap alternative Samsung (SGH-A197) from them in the interum but tonight after paying way too much for a USB cable to connect it to my computer, low and behold the damn thing refuses to show up as a drive thus making access to the pictures on it impossable. I haven't found the work around yet, if it exists that is, but after two hours looking I'm ready to chunk it against the wall. Yeeeeaaaa, not real happy with att at the moment and I could be one of the first to jump ship and head back over to Verizon. I had zero issues with them. Ma Bell, not so much. Between the cheeks at every turn with these guys and cell phones.
Well the rumor mill has been running for the past two years that it was supposed to happen. I guess the big thing is that there now appears to be confirmation.
The real question is does the iPhone even have the right guts to run on Verizon. And the answer is they made a new iPhone just for that purpose.
The interesting thing will be how Verizon's network handles the impact of iPhone users. While Android users are starting to catch up with iPhone owners in how much bandwidth they use, iPhone users still suck up significantly more bandwidth. Meanwhile, I think I'll be checking eBay for iPhones next week. The price'll probably be much lower.
I have no desire to have a Verizon phone. Or an iPhone. So when I see a fucking THREE PAGE LONG post about Verizon iPhones, I'm-a thinkin' "TLDR".
I'll believe it when I see it. Almost since the iphone was released there have been rumors that Verizon would get its own version of it. Unless Verizon has issued a press release announcing the phone, it should be believed in my opinion.
Fuck Apple and it's iCrap products. I pulled the plug on iTunes over a year ago and haven't looked back. My computer thanks me.
I love when Appleheads bitch about Flash. You know what the slowest, most annoying media player is, in my opinion? Quicktime. Inevitably someone will post a trailer for a new movie or something. I'll click the link and find it is Quicktime. After sitting like an idiot for an interminable amount of time, staring at the big blue "Q", I go see if it is up on YouTube yet.
Considering that Verizon is in the midst of launching a true 4G network (LTE) Vs. AT&Ts pseudo 4G network (HSPA+), and Verizon has invested a lot more in their network (capacity, towers, etc..) I'm willing to bet that though there will be an impact it will be easier for Verizon to manage. Oh and IIRC Android Handsets may have outsold iPHone units in the past quarter. As for me I honestly dont know if I will ditch my Droid and jump ship to an iPhone. One of my biggest bitches is with iTunes. I've seen the night mares it has caused my kids and don't know if I want to get involved in that mess. OTOH it sure is a purdy OS, that is locked down.
Android is outselling iPhone (not really surprising, however, when you figure you can get an Android phone from everyone), but iPhone users suck up something like 5 times more data per user than Android users do. So, given they're doing that on a crappy network like ATT, imagine what they'll do on one that's stable (and if the iPhones do have LTE, then they'll really be able to suck the bandwidth). As for me, I'm stuck in a 2 year contract with ATT and with an Android phone. Android isn't a bad operating system, but I've got an iPod Touch which accidentally went for a swim, and I've not had near the amount of trouble out of it, that I've had out of my Android phone. (For example, the keypad on the Android phone keeps crashing, and its apparently a "known bug" with Android. I've had apps on my iPod crash, but never the keypad crash.) The sooner I can ditch this Android phone for an iPhone, the happier I'll be. iTunes ain't perfect, but at least it keeps a complete backup of my iPod so if I have to "nuke it" and do a complete reformat and reinstall, I get all my apps and data back, just like I left it. There's nothing, so far, on Android that can do that. There's a few things that are close, from what I understand, but they still have issues.
Tucker, the problem you are describing with your phone than the OS. I am using both a Droid X and a Droid 2.
I listen to a number of Android podcasts, and the keypad crashing is described on all of them as a problem common to Android, not my particular phone.
I get it most often when I'm texting, but I've had it happen in other apps as well (Evernote for example). The phones just seem to take spells doing it, and rebooting the phone won't clear it up, either.
Yea its one of those "happens to some, others it doesn't" bugs. Like the SMS problem with Motorola phones. As for me I have been pretty much problem free. I dont use the stock keyboard or SMS client. Plus you also have a the ability to root your phone with the support of a huge community if you have a problem.
I don't use the stock keyboard either. Right now I'm using SwiftKey. I'm relatively happy with its auto correction feature.
Actually, I'd be willing to bet money that Google's fixed the problem, but the telcos can't be arsed to push the patch out (a common problem, BTW). Assuming you've got a phone which can be rooted. Every telco seems to have at least one model now that the hacker community can't root (at least not within a few months of the release) or if they do get it rooted, its only a temporary root, and everything is lost once the phone's rebooted.
I like handcent too. I only wish it worked with Google voice on my X. It works fine with google voice on my D2, but not on the X. Not sure why, they are both pretty much the same thing.
Most Android phones end up being hacked. Some may take a little bit more time than the others do, but since Android is open source it is only a matter of time before we are able to unlock them.
I'm looking forward to this. The huge exodus from AT&T should mean that I'll actually be able to make a call in downtown San Francisco at rush hour.
LOL, one can hope. See, I think when the mass exodus occurs, AT&T, will spend even smaller amounts of cash to maintain their network and infrastructure.
