Ban From Report Function

I just added the option to ban people from using the Report function if they spam the hell out of it. Well, Chup and Dayton are spamming the hell out of it. ShootER wanted to know if I could ban their ability to use that function, and I can. If he wants (and of course you all get added to this conversation), I can do it.

I don't think it's reached that point yet. I was mainly curious as to whether it could be done or not.

I think I'd rather warn people for abusing the feature. I don't see them actually needing to report posts, but we should be careful about preventing the option. Suppose somebody posts a subtle message that uses personal info. It might be threatening to the target, but not obvious to anybody else. They need an ability to report such a post.

That's a fair point, too. I just want to let you know that an option for it does exist, if things get absurdly out of hand.

They can compare all they want, because it would be a disingenuous comparison. You abuse the report function, you lose access to the report function. To put it another way to folks who will read this later, I'm sure: Don't fuck with the board features. You will lose them if you do.

And they'd be stupid because this is a straight-forward feature that many who were around for the Enterpriser era of TNZ can understand why we have it. Plus, I remember this feature being turned off for someone on the old vBulletin board (or was it PMs?) so it wouldn't be the first time.

Discouragement gate was mostly a problem with egos that O2C was able to sum up in three measly sentences and get the answers we were looking for.

Since this is related to El Chup, I'll post it here. I have messages in my inbox with complaints that Chup has been spamming the hell out of the rep system, just blasting people with "negative" rep. Now, granted, neg rep is neutered, but it seems to indicate a bigger problem; that being, Chup's retaliation. I like El Chup, he's an all around decent guy, fun to talk to, offers a lot to the board IMO, but what is going on with the things he's doing lately? Repeated spamming of the report function, now he's going into threads and just rep bombing people. My first thought was to nip it, but then I figured that there is no neg rep and it's harmless, but what can I do with Chup? Talk to him? Ask him why he feels the need to keep spamming so many board functions? What am I missing here?

Do nothing. Our official policy is that neg reps have no value. I receive dozens of neg reps a day from Captain X and Federal Farmer. It's meaningless, only serves to illustrate the impotency of their ability to argue their own position. How many people have complained about this? If they are really bothered by it, they should address it in one of the threads where he has done it.

I agree. One of the benefits of rep being neutered is that it's completely meaningless now (not that it meant a helluva lot before). No negative points = no trolling, IMHO.

IIRC, I think I said as much in response to Chup complaining about Dayton "negging" posts in the Blue Room.

My position on trolling is that it's really only trolling...if you allow yourself to be trolled.

Just looked at el chup's recent activity, pretty obvious who complained. I'm surprised to see him bothered by it, to be honest.
