Perhaps the Secret Service extends protection to candidates that have a reasonable chance of winning?
Eventually but this is the earliest it's ever been done, although some have SS due to other things, like Hillary because she is a former first lady.
The Secret Service is only mandated by law to extend protection to leading presidential candidates 120 days before an election. Coincidentally, I was reading up on them today.
Whats been said is that while there are no threats he is such a popular person that the crowds where he goes are getting out of control and his campaign can't handle them anymore. The Secret Service is stepping in to rectify this situation as eventually the nutcases will come out and use the large crowds as cover to try something stupid. As for covering him this early in the campaign....well it wouldn't have to happen if the fucking rats (R's and D's) didn't start running for POTUS way earlier then normal.
As long as the Drazen family doesn't try to get revenge against the senator for Operation: Nightfall, we have nothing to worry about.
