All I know was when I worked in a jail, I would process out inmates who were returning from court. Other inmates would of course be asking

"How did you come out"

They would routinely exclaim if they did get it.

"I got probation!" with a considerable degree of happiness.

Some states at least have dedicated funding streams and state laws setting max case loads. LA does not.

wait until they have to start making those payments! And late fees when the secretary "loses" their payment (whoops-a-daisy!) or they have to go back to court to prove they are making their payments on time, etc.etc. Oh happy day!

A public defender should get dollar for dollar that a prosecutor gets.

If the prosecution spends a million dollars to nail someone than the public defender should get a million to defend that someone from prosecution.

That's the entire American "justice" system in a nutshell, really.

Some people are ignorant. They will learn. For the most part incarceration is far less time than probation if you have to chose between the two. Incarceration costs the state while probation charges fees to the person where if you do not pay them you get incarcerated. It was generally seen as better to do a couple of months in jail and get out without drug testing and probation visits if you could. They cut your time short in jail anyway, and probation does not do that. If you serving time anyway you should just take time over probation. A probation officer can make your life hell on the outside.

Still, the story seems legit.

Everything and everyone is biased, and anyone that denies they're biased is either deluding themselves or lying.

The problem is when a source lies, omits important details, or misrepresents the facts to give the public the wrong idea about a story.

While it has it's faults, the military justice system has one good thing - all the lawyers make the same amount of money (depending on their rank regardless of their specialty). They all operate under the same limitless budget. Thus military defense lawyers are on the same level playing field as the prosecutors. During my career my soldiers have had some great defense lawyers - nobody got the railroad treatment. Since it's free there's no excuse for not lawyering up and I always encouraged it among my squads.

Not because of anything regarding the U.S. justice system. He did have to flee to Europe.

Many places also charge you for the time you spend incarcerated. It's popular with knee-jerk voters as a "git tuff" measure, but ultimately it's one more way to make sure that people will never be able to get back on their feet without being pulled down again.
