Netflix plans to offer subscribers horrifying 'Black Mirror' experience I read that article and was reminded of this bit from Amazon Women on the Moon.
I watched the first episode last night and liked it. It takes meta to the extreme and at the end it had a lot of dark humor.
Just found out season 6 was a thing. After season 5 being pretty meh and Netflix canceling fucking everything, I didn't expect more. Watched the first episode, which was decent and fucking awesome at parts. Hopefully it's not the only good episode this season.
Having now watched all five episodes, I don't think any of them were bad. They did some things different this season, which generally worked well. The supernatural aspect of the forth episode I didn't see coming, because Black Mirror has never incorporated the supernatural before. I have a problem with Demon 79. It was a good episode, but Black Mirror has always been technology- or media-driven, and this episode was supernatural-driven with maybe a vague connection to media. With a few tweaks, they could have told the same story while sticking to the theme. Like, if the demon was actually an AI, or if the main character had a favorite TV show centered on a Dexter-like character and she started becoming that character... The demon taking the form of a dude she saw on TV doesn't seem like enough, although I guess it technically qualifies, the best kind of qualifying. Also, Aaron Paul should have said "yeah bitch" when he finally managed to split the log in his episode. I would also imagine Aaron Paul gets irritated when people want him to say "bitch" all the time, so it's probably best that he didn't.
IIRC, they put out Demon 79 under the title "Red Mirror", as they're experimenting with other genres. Besides, wasn't there a werewolf ep as well? I don't think they put any tech-based explanation for werewolves in there...
The werewolf episode was media-driven, as it was more about the paparazzi people than the werewolf. Same with the episode about the serial killer(s) in Scotland. Media-driven episodes are nothing new. The very first episode, the pig-fucker one, wasn't very tech-driven either. So far, the episodes have been tech-driven, media-driven, or both. Demon 79 could have easily been a media-driven episode, or tech-driven if they pulled a Shyamalanesque twist at the end, but they did neither. Although, as it's the only "Red Mirror" episode so far, it's not really clear what kind of themes they're going for. Despite that, it did feel like a Black Mirror episode, especially the demon character.
I enjoyed Demon 79 slightly more than Joan is Awful. Loved that Gaap used Bobby Farrell from Boney M, to take form, specifically from Rasputin. Joan: "Selma Hayek is going to fucking hate this.". Selma Hayek: "You know I don't read this crap! I am a dyslexic, talented actress with questionable English. That's why I overpay you to protect me! I mean, doesn't my asshole have any rights?".
I finally got around to watching Demon 79. Terrifying, I'm so glad Indian people aren't real. I'd say it technically fits the Black Mirror vibe since the apocalypse was caused by Cold War technology and (presumably) politicians, and not armies of angels and demons fighting it out like you'd normally have.
