Critics: Movie Ads Glorify Attacks On Women
Ads For Movie 'I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell' Have Been Appearing On CTA Buses

A CTA bus ad campaign for the new movie "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell" is infuriating some Chicagoans who say it makes light of sexual assault.

The movie, set for release on Sept. 25, is a biopic on the life of Tucker Max, who became notorious in the early 2000s for chronicling his sexual escapades, set partly in Chicago, and post-college party lifestyle.

Max and the movie have already drawn controversy and protests around the country.

In Chicago, it is the advertising campaign for the film that is drawing ire. It features billboard-style ads that have been appearing on the sides of CTA buses, with the slogans, "Deaf Girls Can't Hear You Coming" and "Strippers Will Not Tolerate Disrespect (Just Kidding!)"

"Clearly, [the ad about deaf girls] makes light of attacks on women (no less disabled women), and I cannot believe that's something considered appropriate messaging on the side of city property," blogger Melissa McEwan wrote.

The ad has also caught the attention of Chicago Tribune columnist Eric Zorn, who wasn't sure what it was promoting when he first saw it.

"It reads like a helpful hint in a predator's handbook and strikes me as being in very bad taste," Zorn wrote in his "Change of Subject" blog.

Whet Moser of the Chicago Reader said he expected the Chicago Transit Authority would end up dropping the ad campaign.

"I'm going to go ahead and set the over/under on "CTA pulls ads, does embarrassed public groveling" for Tuesday," Moser wrote. "That seems like sufficient time for heat to build and for the CTA to realize that ironic misogyny isn't something they should be parading around town."

CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski could not immediately comment on complaints the CTA might have received about the ad, or the process for approving a CTA ad campaign.

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell began as a bestselling nonfiction book by Max, who graduated from the University of Chicago and Duke University Law School.

The Los Angeles Times described Max's blog as "tales of drinking himself into blackouts, humiliating friends and insulting women, intermingled with vivid accounts of his sexual conquests." But it gained a base of fans among college-age males.

Max is portrayed in the movie by actor Matt Czuchry, but also reports on the Web site for the film that he will make a cameo himself.
