Ironically, the PS3 might be a failure for Sony as a video game console, but successful as a platform for Sony's Blu-Ray format. I expect the Blu-Ray sales advantage to climb as people who buy PS3s try out hi-def movies. Even if the average PS3 owner buys only one or two movies, that will still be big numbers over time. Microsoft's got an HD-DVD add-on drive for the XBox, but I think the lack of a bundled solution is going to hurt MS and the format it's pushing.
And in the meantime, Apple has sold over 2 million movie downloads since launching the service in Sept 2006. While the link claims that movie downloads have fallen significantly since the debut, their math is obviously faulty if you calculate it out over the time periods. In any case, Apple doesn't even offer HD movie downloads yet, but once they do (as well as numerous other players in the digital movie market, like Netflix), pushing both of these formats is going to become even harder. Even X-box 360's own capability to download HD movies is undermining the need to buy a HD-DVD add-on drive. So all of this hullabaloo of Blu-ray moving a slightly larger, but insignificant amount of hi-def DVDs is fairly irrelevant, IMO.
No, Wal-Mart is releasing an HD-DVD player for under $300: http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/20/the-wal-mart-299-hd-dvd-player-on-the-way/ Wal-Mart pimping HD-DVD players should be a boost for the format, for your average viewer. We'll see though, I don't have too much faith in HD-DVD at this point. Xerafin has made an excellent point about HD Downloads, though. MS's service for that does quite well. Rich coming from a Sony fanboy... how's that PS3 selling again? Wii is still selling the most, of course it's much cheaper and a hell of a lot of fun. NPD Sales for consoles as follows: January Wii: 436,000 360: 294,000 PS3: 244,000 February: Wii: 335,000 360: 228,000 PS3: 127,000 March: Wii: 259,000 360: 199,000 PS3: 130,000
Looking at those numbers, the Wii's sales are really falling off fast.. could be that we're hitting spring though, not sure. The 360 needs one more tweak to it, before it can become a true media center and it's the main reason I'm holding off on the 360 elite... QUIET THE BASTARD DOWN. They really need to get the fabs working on producing and installing the smaller die chips (65nm I believe), so we can have a quieter and cooler 360. Heat hasn't really been an issue for me, but that fan is pretty loud. Luckily that fan doesn't spin when you're just watching DVDs or downloaded content.
No, it does not. Or that was what I heard last.. That's why I won't buy one. I just found an article which entails a couple people taking it apart.. I'll find out soon I guess. I guess it is using less power though and that's a good thing. They also said the board is using about half the transistors, which would indicate that it probably is the new core. Gosh I hope so!! Need to find some confirmation on this though. http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/news/inside_the_xbox_360_elite.htm Just read in another article it's still 90nm though.. could use a word from MS on this!
It seems to be that Microsoft is making the new Elite systems out of existing components, they'll run through all of them before switching over to the new processor revision.
Well the processor is a new revision, it's still the same die size though. The motherboard has also changed quite a bit. It does run cooler, but not 65nm cool, I don't think. The DVD drive is also different, it's 'softer' and causes less wear and tear.
