I hope Obama doesn't get too wrapped around the axle over the election, and not do something decisive over this. This could be win-win. The world can benefit from a few less extremists, and Obama can win over any potential voters by putting out a "this election isn't shit to me, I've got bigger fish to fry here." I hope Obama does handle this thing with a quickness.
Ironic word choice, no doubt a Libyan wedding is about to get something that wasn't on their registry.
There is something to be said for understanding where they are coming from (not appeasing them or agreeing with them, mind you) in order to think of better ways to avoid further violent extremism in the future. The method of blowing them up and invading their countries tends to make things worse, if you hadn't noticed. But for those extremists who have already carried out violent acts, there is little hope for them to get out of this alive.
Understanding where they are coming from (cesspool of eternal despair and misery) still won't change anything. If you have the "death to America" mentality nothing will satisfy you. Whether they have one reason or five reasons to hate us, they will still be just as violent. Here's how we should treat everyone who violently attacks our interests. Anything less emboldens them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72Yh67e9lRo
Islamistic subhumans in Iran tried to storm the Swiss embassy today, because Switzerland as a Neutral State represents the US interests in Iran. Thanks to hundreds of Iranian heavily armed policemen, there was no bloodshed. Up to now, at least. I may rant about Christian YECs every day, but compared to these islamistic fundies, they are all nice, reasonable guys. I heard people say that it was a dumb idea to post this stupid film on youtube. I agree. But there ist freedom of press here, if you like it or not. What shall the West do? Ban everything which could make the islamists turning into a mob of bloodlusty maniacs? Goddamn, some of my lefty friends still defend these islamists. When I call these religious madmen "clueless and retarded", they call me a racist. Should we bow to this freaks? Should we cencor our press because some bigot in Saudi Arabia could be insulted? There is an unholy alliance between extreme lefties and these islamistic imbeciles. And it makes me wonder. Especially when it comes to the fact how islamists treat women. Extremists of all kind are a plague. I often have heated discussions with my lefty friends when it comes to Islam. It always ends in me saying that I use the Koran as toilet paper, because they make me so angry with their political correctness!
And are they responsible for that cesspool of eternal despair and misery that they had the unfortunate luck of being born into?
What difference does it make? There is a not insignifigant number of people in that region who tend to take to the streets over what we see as the slightest percieved insult to their religion. We are a country that [-]values[/-] cherishes free speech, and we live in a hyperconnected world where it sure seems like any ignorant, hate filled mouthbreather with an internet connection in Bo Whoop, Arkansas can spark deadly riots on the other side of the world. "Understanding where they're coming from" is all well and good, but I don't see how it helps in situations like this.
So it looks like the "film" at the center of this had some ties to LA. It apparently was shot in Santa Clarita with local actors, and funded by a group in Duarte called "Media for Christ." Plus "Sam Bacile" appears to live in LA. So if anyone needs me, I'll be in Reno.
Ehh, so do we. To help prevent further situations like this? After decades of imperialism in the region, it might be to late, though. This isn't about a video or over religion (there were warnings of these attacks prior to the video's release, even). It's obvious we've been going about this thing incorrectly for the last 11 years, and even before that.
There's also some question as to whether "Sam Bacile" is a pseudonym, or if he doesn't exist at all. The fact that it rhymes with "imbecile" may be a clue.
Good LA Times article about the film: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-libya-filmmaker-20120913,0,1418897,full.story "Bacile" looks like an alias for a convicted criminal and radical Christian. And he was helped by a guy who spends his time protesting abortion clinics and hunting Al Qaeda cells in California. You can't make this stuff up.
Not even close. You know, this whole knee-jerk, "Everything bad that happens anywhere in the world is somehow the West's fault" line only gets you so far. Internecine tribal conflicts...sure Imperialism had a role in that, but please explain to me how Western imperialism is at fault for the obscure movie trailor/Theo Van Gough/Satanic Verses/Swedish cartoon backlashes...not to mention the religious based violence done to fellow Muslims that is not ultimately about tribalism?
And even if this film never made into on Youtube they would have still found something else to cry foul over. These riots are about 9/11 more then anything. The film was used just to rile up the crowds and now it's obvious the film was used to rile up the crowd in Libya so a team of gunmen could attack the Ambassador while using the rioters as cover. I'm willing to bet the hit team wasn't trying to kill him as much as they were trying to kidnap him and others. Everyone keeps harping on the film but it's really a distraction moment.
It must be easy drawing blood from a radical Muslim - they have the thinnest skin in the world. Their veins must jump right out at the needle!
So a Coptic Christian pretending to be an Israeli Jew is responsible for trying to start a new Crusade. Surprise, surprise, surprise...
