I didn't realize how big of a deal this was until I heard Brian Greene explain why on JRE. So for those who poo poo on Joe Rogan, he reaches a large audience and because of that, dummies like me have a better understanding of physics. Not a huge one, but a better one. For those that don't know who Brian Greene is. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Greene
Even though scientists had determined beyond almost all doubt that there's a black hole at the center of our galaxy, it's still amazing to see it confirmed. Another stunning image. Hopefully, they'll speed up the process and start doing this with all nearby galaxies. I saw a video on this earlier today and heard an astonishing fact: one of the stars hurled around SagA* (our galaxy's black hole) was moving at an astonishing relative speed of 8% the speed of light (15,000 miles per second). A star!
Fast enough for time dilation to take effect, a small amount but still enough. The time dilation is about 11 seconds an hour, or roughly 1.17 days over a years time.
Special Relativity props! And, as a nod to General Relativity, we can assume the spacetime curvature gradient is low over the star's diameter throughout its passage near the black hole, or else tidal forces would rip it apart.
