Former teacher and Nazi symbolism enthusiast (but only because it looks cool, not because of the Jew cooking) Dayton Kitchens was permabanned from Wordforge today.

Has eliteforge gone overboard? Or gotten back on board? And what does this say for the board?

Is this really still Wordforge? Is it a violation of the ADA to ban an autistic one footed part time bus driver from a dried up message board?

And what about Jesus? What would Jesus say? Sure @dayton committed numerous real life crimes - impersonating a federal agent, spousal abuse, choking out a shoplifter, felony hit and run - but he never stopped believing.

I'm all about quality over quantity, but looking at TrekBBS now, it's still buzzing along with a highly active user base. People don't feel squashed there, even though their moderation is a bit more stringent than ours. Why? It's not because they have better posters, it's because the better posters stayed and the assholes were shown the door once they went too far. Wordforge waited far, far too long to show those assholes the door, and by the time they did the damage was long done.

It's not about having an echo chamber. We've bled people over the years as they've stepped away from the antics of Ramen, Dayton, gturner, Sokar, and others. The fun, engaging people left because who wants to be in a place that lets someone post constant racist epithets in the middle of a discussion about something wholly unrelated? Dayton got the boot from TBBS ages ago because they knew he was just there to stir shit up. It took Ramen actually threatening a member of the board with bigoted imagery, an implied threat, but a clear one. Wordforge, in the past, let it go on too long, whether that was due to the belief that even bigots should have a place here, or because they simply didn't want to appear heavy handed and biased, the end result was the same, and plenty of members here just didn't want to deal with that. I can't blame them.

So now the lament for how Wordforge has become an echo chamber, even though the person kicked was a poster who only wanted to hear the echo of his own voice. You didn't matter, neither did I, or anyone else. The only thing lost was prolific post counts and drama. It was never about difference of opinion, unless the difference was "I can shit in every thread and get away with it" vs "don't shit in every thread and cause it to derail." A message board has to be accessible to everyone in some fashion, and that means removing elements that derail everything. We all know the ignore function doesn't do shit, never has. You ignored Dayton, he still dragged others down until the thread was a mess because there are people who can never look away, and all it takes is one side argument with a blocked user to fuck up the entire thread flow.

Once in a while wasn't an issue, but it was a chronic condition with Dayton, and it is with other posters, too. For too long this has gone on. Yes, Wordforge is a shell of its former self, but not because people are trying to make it an echo chamber. It's a shell because people took too long to do the right thing and patience for someone to do it finally dried up until so many members left. Certainly some left because of life changes, and others had different interests, but there should have been new people. Why weren't there? Maybe it's because Wordforge was always more of a spin-off board in a sense, or maybe it wasn't the right flavor for some, but I would bet dollars to donuts a healthy chunk of it was due to a new user browsing the Red Room and seeing what was on display by some of Wordforge's most lamented trolls.

Don't mistake the eviction of bad faith trolls for an echo chamber. It's the board trying to right itself after years of allowing something that went on far too long and caused far too much damage. Whether it's too late, or even enough, we'll see, but it's still a good step in the right direction.

WF has it's tighty righties, and we have seen months without dayton. The board did not end, the right had it's people making arguments. The problem is projection. If it is not a complete echo chamber for the right then it must be an echo chamber for the left if they are allowed to make arguments. About the only other rightie I see on the chopping block is @Dinner because his last vacation was 90 days.

I don't see @T.R , @Marso , @Tuttle , @oldfella1962 , or @Federal Farmer going down the road of multiple bannings, any bannings, or even warnings. Even Dinner will probably be a while and a bunch of meltdowns before he gets the hammer. Eliteforge does not seem to want to ban people, and you have to go pretty far beyond just having a right wing opinion to get yourself a vacation or permaban.

I would like to argue that forgetting the reason you have a problem with someone due to time, and the brain, fading memory and pain is not as lovely as it sounds. It often means you make the same mistake with the same asshole again and again.

People always tell me to never burn bridges. Fuck no, if I find a reason to disconnect from someone I burn that bridge and the person. If I don't I forget and go back because there was a reason I was there in the first place. It is what you have to do when time makes you forget why you left in the first place.

The only thing Dayton did was make posts that irritated certain members of this board. There was nothing stopping you or anyone else from putting him on ignore. But many posters here couldn't do that. They replied and usually they upped the anti by throwing insults. They makes them no better than the person they are maligning and in most boards would have warranted a warning or even a couple days vacation for the bomb throwing.

You don't have to tell me about Trek BBS because I'm very familiar with that board. The only debate that happens in TNZ is between a tiny group of the left and the far left. That's not a balanced forum. That's an echo chamber. Few outside that little sub forum bother posting there because usually it devolves into accusations of racism, bigotry, homophobia, or misogyny. The problems that seem to pop up outside that snake pit is when one of the "moderators" bring their petty agenda over to the other sub forums. We can all make guesses as to why this board hasn't grown. Part of the reason is that board memberships across the internet have went down since Facebook, Twitter and the rest have come along. But another reason is that they tend to just be people insulting each other. After awhile that gets old and people leave.
