Both good to hear and chilling at the same time. Eventually, yeah, the jackbooted censorship will backfire, but that some people actually DON'T KNOW about this? Frightening.
How many Americans today know who Randy Weaver is? We don't even have the censorship to keep people from knowing; we have apathy.
There was a special on PBS on "the tank man", the dude who stood in front of the tanks (and who has sadly disappeared) and they showed that famous picture to some Chinese college kids, and it was totally out of context them, they had no idea what it was.
Most Chinese college students would call you a liar if you told them their history. Several people have proved this...
I wonder how much of those kids not knowing what the tank man was was legitimate ignorance, how much was not wanting to believe it, and how much was feigning ignorance because it's a taboo subject that leads to people disappearing in the night. When the guy on Frontline showed the kids, one of them whispered "1989" and they they proptly shut up.
Not my usual input, but I figure O2C won't mind too much, some lyrics from a Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd) tune about the massacre at Tiananmen: Roger Waters, Amused to Death- lyrics of "Watching TV"
