They were classmates at Julliard and roommates before either of them got really famous. There's an interview that Williams did on like the Tonight Show, or Letterman some time after Reeve died, and Williams was basically in tears talking about Reeve. And there's probably a good reason to think that if it hadn't been for Reeve, we'd never have gotten the wonder that was Williams. Because Reeve started getting successful before Williams did, and Reeve kept a roof over their heads at times.

Reeve's Superman basically jumpstarted the whole superhero movie genre and laid the groundwork for how you have a successful franchise (and then completely fuck it up). All the major studios have made billions off of superhero movies in the decades since, and if Reeve's Superman had flopped, it'd be as forgotten as that Alan Arkin superhero movie is today.
I'm always amazed by folks who are drawn to celebrities who would, in all likelihood, despise that person and their politics.
