If you tain't read it, read it. (Google books version [free] or Project Gutenberg version [also free].) It is an incredibly entertaining account of the Civil War, recounted by a private in the First Tennessee Regiment of the Confederate Army.

I have to wonder if the book didn't serve as inspiration for Heinlein's Starship Troopers in some manner. Both of them spend their entirety focused on the perspective of the PBI (Poor Bloody Infantry), and the larger cause they're fighting for is just "background noise" for lack of a better phrase. No matter what one might think of the Civil War, you'd be well served by reading Pvt. Watkins memoirs. :salute:

Sam Watkins' book is a treasure trove of info about the everyday life of a Confederate soldier. I highly recommend it.
