Today, the Marine Corps released guidance on the removal of public displays of the Confederate battle flag.
I had several commanders in the military who made the same declarations regarding the confederate flag. This was back in the early 90s. prior to that, I couldn't have cared less about the flag. But, when their reasons were explained, I whole-heartedly agreed.
yes the army has had this rule in effect for a long time - I wonder why the marines are just now getting around to doing it? Generally they are way stricter than the army.
TBF the Navy supporting a Confederacy that sank like it was wearing concrete boots would be a tad incongruous.
That makes some sense. Would we have a Joseph Stalin military base? Or an Adolf Hitler Military base? Why would we have military bases named after people who were huge traitors to the US, and actually killed US soldiers and attacked our country? Maybe we should name some bases after Brittish generals in the revolutionary war? It seems pretty stupid to me but the south is a bunch of whiny wussy losers so we have to do what they want or the racists will cry. Speaking of, where is SHREPL anyway? Same. People who think the South seceded over states' rights need to read the Cornerstone Speech as well as the constitutions of the various states where the right to own slaves was specifically codified.

Either the American Civil War was an unfortunate messy disagreement within a family. Or the former Confederate States are a conquered and subjugated foreign nation. If we're all one family that had a fight then these Confederate generals are American generals and naming a base after them is not akin to naming a base after an enemy. Or we were two separate nations and one conquered and subjugated the other, which would make the Confederates enemy generals. I find it amusing how many people are unintentionally throwing their weight behind the War of Northern Aggression story line.
Then the former Confederate States and their people have a right to demand the right to self determination and the end of the occupation of its lands by the imperialist colonizer known as the United States. Maybe Trump should be drawing down forces in the former Confederacy as well in Germany. Edited to add: This scenario could be amusing. If a group were to go to the UN and make the claim that former CSA was occupied territory how many nations do you think would back the claim? Neo-Confederates as the equivalent of the Kurds or Palestinians. China would eat that up so would Russia and Mexico. Man could you imagine if Zimmerman had proposed reviving the Confederacy instead of returning Arizona and what not to Mexico.
