http://news.yahoo.com/star-trek-explains-nsa-093038494.html DS9 doesn't get much love, even among mainstream Trek nerds. I can count on one hand the amount of people I know that consider themselves "Niners".
DS9 is the most realistic trek...followed by TOS. I honestly didn't see a lot of Voyager and Ent to judge too much. But most of trek post TOS seemed to exist in a completely unachievable ultra liberal socialist utopia. No, this isn't an attack on the idea, I'd love it if it were workable, but humans being the animals we are would never allow it to work. You do need groups like Section 31 (NSA/CIA) who do those nasty things you can't talk about in polite company, but at the same time they need oversight. Oversight doesn't mean taking away their power, but they need to be watched so as to not abuse it..."Power Corrupts".
I haven't caught STiD yet, but something tells me Khan Harrison is more trustworthy & honourable than Luther Sloan.
Anyone ever seen "Burn Notice"? Back when Jere Burns character of "Anson Fullerton" was on it, Anson was forcing Michael to do various things for him and Michael (a former CIA operative) snapped and said "I didn't want to do any of this!" To which Anson said "You didn't want to what Michael? To be part of a secret organization that killed people! What do you think you've been doing for the last 20 years!"
