Over here, laundromats are one of the few things that have been open the whole time.

Maybe we need an option for voluntary infection? This is not for this time as we are in the middle of it. Let us say a virus pops up like this. We have a year or more until the vaccine and no real treatment that works.

So we start the first stage which is the lockdown to stop the transmission vectors. Once we see the medical facilities are not going to be overrun we start working through a voluntary infection protocol. People volunteer to be tested, exposed, and go through the sickness until they are clear of the virus because their bodies are killing it. We o this in a controlled situation. You take time off of work, go to a designated hotel or hospital that is set up to monitor your progression and care for you. When you come out the other side you should be tested that you are clean for the virus and have the antibodies. If you are a person who still carries the virus while not being sick we can put you in areas where immune people are so that you are not passing on the virus.

Then you are back to living while we keep those quarantines in a safe area among non-exposed people. The only time the true isolation would be would be while you are getting immunity (AKA sick). That is when you would not want to be flooding a person with outside virus particles and other sicknesses.

weird - you'd think that would be essential. I would think if the laundromat practiced social distancing they would be covered. For one the place is knee deep in bleach, detergents, etc. so a virus would have a tough time surviving for too long.

I think I read something about soliciting volunteers to test the virus, so the wheels might be turning already on this.

The pathway for the virus to infect your body's cells is through mucous membranes. It doesn't matter whether you inhale it, lick your finger, rub your eyes, finger yourself, or stick your finger up your nose.

Your skin is a marvelous barrier. Coming into contact with the virus on your hands won't infect you (except for sores, open cuts, etc).

There is some discussion about how far and for how long it can be transmitted by airborne transfer, but it's accepted this is happening (6 foot separation recommendation).

In a medical setting, fitted n95 masks are used to help avoid inhaling the virus. These come in different sizes, and the wearer must take additional steps for it to fit correctly. If you haven't been fit and know how to wear it, these won't help you much if at all.

Wearing a cloth mask over your nose and mouth helps trap particles you breath, spit, exhale, cough, hack out, helping to protect others to some degree if you are infected.

yeah... two of them closed almost immediately when it was thought that a few weeks' shut down was all that'd be needed and were due to reopen, but then the shit hit the fan. The third one is in the lower level of a variety store that's only doing "take out" window service, and thus isn't accessible either.
Sucks, but I get it as all three are owned/operated by older Asians who have likely borne the brunt of bigotry in the past-despite making up nearly 2/3 of the local populace.

OK, I think the closures broke my brain. The banks are closed because I guess they are not essential businesses, but the car dealerships are selling cars and advertising they are disinfected.

I guess I am fucking really confused as to what an essential business happens to be if the car dealerships are open and selling cars, but the bank is closed.

The other thing is why the fuck are people not freaking out because the bank is closed? Isn't that supposed to be a thing that scares the crap out of people when they cannot get to all their money immediately, or am I just really old and that is not a thing anymore?

I feel your pain! I have a Wells Fargo right down the street from my office. I could have gone yesterday during lunch. But they are shut...the fuck...down.
The one in my neighborhood is open (drive thru only) but closes at 4:00 PM and I get off work at 4:00 PM. Thus I will have to take vacation time and leave early from work if I want to go there. And no smart asses...not everything can be done online.

Two days ago (it may have changed) the WWE (fake wrestling) was deemed an essential business in Florida. :brood: How the holy fuck can wrestlers keep six feet of distance apart? :chris:

So wrestling is happening, but golf is shut down? I can go to a drive in movie, but I cannot go to church and listen to the sermon in my car with the windows shut? I have to shop in the daytime with all the other people while trying to social distance, but there is a curfew so I cannot shop at walmart in the middle of the night when no one is around. They are giving me a check for 1200 dollars, but the banks are closed and I have nowhere to spend the money even if I could cash the check. Don't tell me online because I cannot spend cash online without depositing it in the closed bank.

Oh, and why is it that now that all you can get is take out are all the fucking chinese restaurants closed?

Sounds like Florida Problems. Takeout restaurants are open here, and 7-Eleven is still open 24/7.

RE: The checks, if anyone actually gets them and they're not just another Donnie-boy scam, there's this thing called "direct deposit."

Most, if not all banks here have suspended inside transactions, but the drive-through lanes are open. The Wells Fargo next door to my doctor's office was doing a booming business when I left my appointment this morning.

I wish I had taken a picture of something.

Last week, I wanted Chinese and called my favorite takeout joint. No answer. So, I drove down there. It was dark inside and they had a handwritten note taped to the door. "We from China. We know how bad this is. Will open when it is over." That's an exact quote.

My bank's lobby is by appointment only. However, all of the drive thru lines are fully staffed and the three convenient ATMs all have cash and check deposit functions built into them.

cool! But not all banking needs are cut-and-dried. And recently we had a situation where the drive-thru teller put the money into the wrong tube and somebody's money ended up in the wrong car and they hauled ass with the money.
Call me crazy but I'm an old school face-to-face guy.

yeah what's up with that? And for many of them their whole business is based around takeout & delivery!
They should be SME's and raking in the bucks!

Anyway I went to a different Walmart on my way home because they carry my dog's favorite rope chew toy brand.
Something didn't look right. WAIT! Wasn't there a Subway sandwich shop in that corner of the store? Yes there was.... pre-coronapocalypse. Now it's not just closed it's GONE! :wtf: Nothing but pipes & wires coming out of the walls & ceiling.

Take out places are open here too. Most places are still doing take out and doing delivery.

I said, for the morons who cannot read, chinese places are closed. Chinese places are often take out places with no real sit in eating during normal times. For some reason these places who do great take out business during normal times completely closed despite the fact they are where people know to go for take out.

I got to wondering why they closed. This might have to do with not king orange cheeto trying with his faux news propaganda network to demonize the chinese and promoting war with china because of a lie that the corona virus was made by the chinese despite it clearly being natural according to every real doctor.

So I am left wondering if our local small business owning community members faced threats and hate and simply decided to pack up rather than dealing with it. That would be terribly sad since they are nice people over all. They might also be facing some family problems and tragedies being they have relatives over in china and they have already been hit.

At any rate, I totally had to go get some sushi instead. It seems the japanese places are still doing take out. That does not make much sense considering the MAGAts cannot tell the difference in asian people.

HA! Last night my wife decided she was in the mood for some Chinese food. The closest place is (and has always been) delivery & pick-up only. I figured they would not be affected, but to be sure I called them just to see if they were open. The phone rang...and rang...and rang....(damn they must be really busy)...and rang...and rang...then a recording started:
"we are sorry but we are closed from March blah blah undecipherable gibberish until May blah blah undecipherable gibberish." :( So sometime in May (on or about undecipherable gibberish) they will open again.

So in that mini-strip mall there are five businesses: the Chinese restaurant (closed) a vaping/CBD store (closed) an Anytime Fitness gym (closed ironically) a nail salon (closed) and Little Caesar Pizza (open). Make of that what you will.

Somewhere (maybe in this thread or the SARS thread), @Elwood talked about this very thing... about seeing a sign in the window of his local Chinese takeout place expressing this fear.

    ETA: Here it is: https://wordforge.net/index.php?thr...-different-for-you.119693/page-9#post-3233831

There are also reports nationwide of Stoopids attacking people who "look Chinese," just as they attacked anyone who "looked Arab" following 9/11.

I am beginning to realize something. Years back everything took a real crash into the dirt for me. Th processes of life took so much from me that it became worthless. It culminated in a couple of weeks in bed not moving and eating nothing but sugar. It took a lot to get back from that especially after the neuropathy pain started. It was not like I was overly thrilled with this body anyway. But I did find I wanted to go on because of some things I enjoyed. Then I even felt like I wanted to do some things aside from just exist again. I even strived for some things and thought I could make something for myself.

Then this shit happened. Those things I was living for have been taken away. It is not even like they were big things. I could get it if my needs were luxurious, but they weren't. I am glad this hit before I had actually set things up. I have been trough having your efforts destroyed before. I was actually wondering how the world could put a stop to what I wanted given the simplistic and easy nature of it, and the world answered.

Now the potential to start all that shit again is being pushed off more and more, and the world is cowering in fear trying to change so it can never happen again. I grow tired of this physical world. I don't know if there is anything beyond, but if this is the new existence of being in a human body I am growing very tired of it much more quickly than before.

I can't even see people smile anymore because of fucking masks. If the happy pills go away I am going with them.

"The processes of life took so much from me that it became worthless. It culminated in a couple of weeks in bed not moving and eating nothing but sugar."

 wow that is positively the worst thing your "physical body" can be subjected to. It's literally the opposite of how humans evolved and how humans survive and prosper. That said:
you survived and learned from those desperate times! You are alive and of sound mind and body today 18 April 2020. Yep, right here in the physical world where there are ironically thousands of different religions offering variations on the same delusion - that delusion being that there is "something else" waiting for us when we shuffle off our mortal coil. That's nothing but a side effect of the most advanced brain on the planet and thus of course uniquely human. Because humans can imagine, we do imagine, for better or worse.

The universe was not created around my happiness, and I'm guessing it wasn't created around yours either. Does this sound gloom & doom and pessimistic? WELL IT'S NOT!
It's optimistic! It means we should focus on right now. Try to forget the negative past - we are literally enslaved by a ghost when we let our past failures and disappointments get the best of us.
That can drag us down and slow us down in our quest for future success and happiness. Yesterday and everything before it does not exist. Today and (hopefully) tomorrow do exist so squeeze what you can out of each day.

My main boss at work is a "be in the moment" kind of a guy but he's no hippie-dippy wimp. He's a generally laid-back friendly Texan :storm: and true-to-form he's larger than life at six feet three and down to earth, to the point, and doesn't pull any punches. But his "be in the moment" advice he dispenses isn't wrong! It applies to everybody, all the time. Jock Willink (epically awesome retired Navy SEAL)
has a great leadership/personal behavior attitude also - whatever you are doing, CRUSH IT! Depressing, boring, seemingly trivial tasks and missions are what...matters...now. Do your best, crush it, then move on to bigger and better things. You can't be completely, truly focused and letting your mind wander toward depressing, discouraging thoughts at the same time - it's impossible.

One last thing - the body and mind are not separate entities. What we eat and how we eat affects our minds as well as our bodies and creates a feedback cycle that can end up positive or negative, it's our choice. It's the same with exercise. Give our bodies and brains the best fuel (not the most expensive, the healthiest) we can get - ease up on the poisons (whether processed food or tobacco or whatever) - exercise vigorously and consistently within our physical limitations - and try to get enough sleep. These things apply to everyone whether rich or poor, right or left wing, young or old. Everyone will benefit from doing this, it's basic science. Most people will end up in a better state of physical and mental health if they give it a try.

Just heard that masks are now mandatory at my old job. Of the 5 people in the graphics department, only the guy who actually runs the printer in the print shop is on site, with everyone else phoning it in. The print guy is a batman fan, so he's wearing a Batman Halloween mask over his surgical mask. Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.
