The Cayman Islands has a special place when it comes to John Grisham's and John Le Carre's portrayal of international money laundering, but maybe they were just the low-hanging fruit. The Premiere of the British Virgin Islands was recently busted in Miami on various charges, including money-laundering and drug trafficking. While the Daily Fail is hardly my idea of high end journalism, I think this story gives some interesting context to the story. It reminds me of when I was in the Cayman Islands and the UK government decided to "crack down" on corruption. It turned out the "crack investigators" sent over from the UK spent most of their time partying. One particularly embarrassing photograph came out of the lead investigator in a swimming pool using an inflatable horsie. The ultimate outcome was that the "crack investigators" didn't find any evidence of corruption; a finding that was widely snickered at among Caymanians. The BVI investigation report suggests that the government be suspended and the Governor (appointed by the Crown) impose direct rule for two years. But I wonder (being only somewhat cynical) if the Governor might get some of this on him. Anyway, it's an interesting read and I wonder if their might be more stuff like this as the international community seeks to enforce sanctions on the Russian oligarchs and Putin himself.
