Sony CEO has already said that he was going to let Microsoft announce the next Xbox first... So what could this teaser be for an event on Feb. 20??

Given that the current Playstation has had its master encryption compromised they kind of have to come out with a new one.

I think the reason is that these consoles have been out for roughly a billion years. The technology is getting old, and the gap between what computers can do and what consoles can do is growing larger. If you look at something like Far Cry 3, it ran and looked so much better on the PC.

I love Michael Pachter. He's awesome on Bonus round and wherever else he shows up.

Also, it seems pretty fucking obvious that this is orbis or whatever the PS4 will be. It's about FUCKING time. PS3 and 360 have gone on long enough, and with the WiiU already being out, it's a good time/holiday release for new platforms. Almost definitely there will be 2 new consoles this fall.

Considering the PS3 launched over six years ago... about damn time.

Didn't they show off a PS3 controller prototype too? But then they backtracked and went with the same design.

I think this is what the PS4 controller will look like:

The Boomerang controller? They did release that in Japan. That thing looked interesting, but in hindsight, it was kind of ridiculous. I think the PS4 controller looks very similar to the Dual Shock 3... Enough to be plausible, IMHO.

WSJ.com is reporting that PS4 will play PS3 games via an Internet streaming service!

    http://m.ign.com/articles/2013/02/16/report-playstation-4-will-stream-games

Report: PlayStation 4 Will Stream Games
“The new technology… will allow users to play games delivered over the Internet…”
    February 15, 2013
    by Colin Moriarty
Not surprisingly, the PlayStation 4 rumors have been flowing as of late. With the expected reveal of the console coming this Wednesday, February 20 in New York City, it only makes sense that little bits of information would begin to emerge about what we’ll be seeing.
The newest rumor is in regard to the next PlayStation’s ability to stream games. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that “Sony Corp. is planning to offer technology to stream games to its next videogame console,” according to its own sources.
The new technology, to be unveiled Wednesday along with the new console, will allow users to play games delivered over the Internet, these people said. The streaming service, they added, is designed to use current PlayStation 3 titles on the new console; the new device is also expected to play new games stored on optical discs.
As WSJ points out, such a move on Sony’s part would be unsurprising. Even when it was drowning in red ink, it still took a massive risk when it bought streaming service Gaikai for $380 million. There is absolutely no doubt that, with an investment that significant at such a difficult time for Sony, Gaikai's technology will be poised to play an important role in Sony’s future.
Streaming games to PlayStation 4 (and perhaps other Sony devices) would be significant, giving gamers access to a wide array of titles that they never had to purchase outright. This could suggest that Sony may have a game rental-like service on its next PlayStation, or perhaps even a new subscription service that would give gamers access to a library of offerings. At this point, everything remains speculative.
We've reached out to Sony for official comment and will update when we hear back. In the meantime, catch up on all of the pertinent PlayStation 4 news and rumors, including (but not limited to) information on PS4's controller, word of a new LittleBigPlanet and the possibility of Killzone 4 being a launch title.

    *yawn*

Sony almost killed its console business with the PS3 because it was so damn expensive when it launched. Yes, sales eventually recovered and the PS3 now has a huge market share, but that's only because the price dropped more than 50% in recent years.

Price point is going to be a huge factor in the PS4's success.

So they're gonna make us repurchase PS3 games to play it on the PS4? Why can't they just make it backwards compatible?

My PS3 works just fine. the games I liked the most I still have so that's not really an issue for me.

I'm guessing that if you downloaded the PS3 games over the PSN, there's a good chance that they'd still work on the PS4 since its the same PSN... but then again, maybe not. They are abandoning te CELL architecture for more traditional CPU.

I hope all of this becomes clear on Wednesday.

It's all just speculation, but the general buzz is around $399... Which would work for me. If that's the case, I might even buy one this holiday season.

They could, it would just cost a lot more money. Or for the same money you would have a much less powerful machine hardware wise. Late 90's console hardware is around the limits of what can be easily brute force emulated through software.

I disagree. I was surprised by their presentation, and was amazed at how many games they show.

They announced a lot of cool features, like playing games while they download which the PC has been doing a little bit of, but on consoles sounds cool. Suspending the game state sounds awesome, where you can pause whenever. All this streaming stuff sounds awesome. Streaming from your PS4 with no major hassle sounds great. You get to stream in game demos. That's great for developers because they don't need to make separate, specific demos. Games looked fantastic, even through video compression. Also, Jonathan Blow might be an asshole, but the Witness looks like a modern Myst, and that's cool. It's also really cool that he got time on the stage to talk about the Witness. He's a one man team that in the past wouldn't have been given any exposure.

There are problems for the future, however. I was reading on twitter that DDR5 ram is expensive, especially that much. Will they be charging for an online service? There's a bunch more stuff to nitpick, but overall, I was impressed.

So, it sounds like they're just ripping off Onlive.
    Am I right?

No, because if they were ripping off onlive, they would be making people pay for a service to play full games over streaming.

Sure, some of the technology is the same, but they're incorporating it for demos of games, not for full games.

Onlive was plagued with lag issues which you don't want for a full game, but if you're just trying a game out, could be fine.

Sony bought an OnLive competitor called Gaikai last year. They had superior tech, apparently. They've integrated te technology into the PS4 and Playstation Mobile.

What excites me the most is the oppurtunity to interact with the game world on mobile devices and not just on the console. The Killzone Shadow Fall and inFAMOUS Second Son looks spectacular! It would've nice to see more new IP, but there's always E3.

IGN quoted a source last night that was right on a lot of details about PS4 like the name and launch window. They said 2 models will release. One at $429 and another at $529. This is also inline with a source that priced the Japaneese PS4 at ¥40,000 or $415. The source said that the price could change.

If that's the case, I was thinking $399 tops. $30 more won't kill me.
