I pretty much disagree with Bill Maher, but at least he seems to not be a phony; he won't twist what he believes to suit his ideology. Also, he's not afraid to call a spade a spade.
Although he is solidly in the Democratic camp, Maher consistently rejects political correctness. There's plenty there to appeal to centrists.
I know - what kind of a world are we living in? That said taking Bill's remark in context, it made sense (to anyone in his general age group or has even a slight grasp of history to even know what a "house nigger" means) and he's no racist by any stretch, even if I don't agree with his politics most of the time. If he was racist I doubt he'd have relationships with black women. Comparing this to the Cathy Griffin FUBAR Bill is at least funny most of the time.
You just like Bill because he has a hard on for killing Muslims. It is good to see genocide in the middle east bringing together extremist dems and reps. As for what Bill said, he is hired to be offensive and shocking unlike Kathy Griffin. If HBO fires him that would be quite hypocritical of them. They want him to have controversy to attract viewers. Getting away with saying nigger while not being Quentin will probably endear him to the right. Even more scary is this fucking tablet predicted everything after Quentin in that last sentence. I wonder if it could just type as me without me typing. Then I could truly be teh baba.
Cannot stand Bill Maher. But it was a joke, and, anyway, he's apologized for it. I suspect that will be the end of it, but if someone on the right made a similar joke, their career would be over.
Saw the clip. Stupid thing to say. What was up with the guy he was interviewing saying he "could come work in the fields" though?
Oh no!!!! Volpone has shown my comedy hero to have feet of clay!! I'm destroyed!!! You've destroyed me, Volpone!! You're so powerful!!!! NOOOOOOOO!!!!! Liberalism has fallen before the might of Volpone!! It's burning down before my eyes, and I'm so sad inside!!! I'll never be okay again!!!! There, is that what you wanted, you petty little viper? Hey, keep the dream alive, skippy, maybe someday.
Of course they do. You just wish they didn't. Could be worse though. It's not as offensive as titsun.
I see it for what it was an attempt at sarcasm and being edgy. He still broke HBO's corporate rules which is why he is now tripping over himself to say mea culpas.
Trust me, nobody under the age of 40 has ever heard that word used in a racial context, unless of course they have a few crusty old racist family members.
Both. In other words, I've heard people use the phrase and asked what they meant. Granted, I was in high school at the time Cue @Ten Lubak And a stupid joke.
Fair enough. Maybe it's a Southern thing. There was plenty of casual racism at the schools I attended, but nothing much more creative than the n-word. Of course it was a predominantly white school too, so the racism was more theoretical than anything.
My dad, a blatant racist, used the term. I believe it's a reference to the ace of spades playing card and the saying "black as the ace of spades." To me, a spade is something you dig with and nothing more.
It probably is a Southern thing. I was hearing racist jokes as early as sixth grade, my school was predominantly white as well. It also is a small town.
Yes, and I believe the original meaning of "call a spade a spade" was a mockery of the bureaucratic tendency to refer to such objects as "manual earth-restructuring implements" and the like.
In my case, that's pretty much true. I'm 48 and--apart from movies--I don't hear that word very often. I visited my dad's sister's family in Georgia when I was a kid. My dad's brother-in-law (probably around 60 at the time [1980]) used the word frequently. My dad didn't make waves, but he pulled me aside and said "Don't listen to that nonsense." I have an uncle (now about 80) who grew up in a racially divided Oakland, and he has used the word on occasion. I don't think he has any real antipathy towards blacks, that's just what he grew up calling them. I had one stranger use it in a casual conversation a decade or so back, and I was fairly shocked.
I have heard "call a spade a spade" and had no idea it had any sort of racial meaning. I've never heard someone call another person a spade.
