As you may know, we've been experiencing a large amount of database errors lately. Previously I thought it was just a couple corrupt tables (tables are where data is stored), however, this no longer appears to be the case. Something is causing the database server to crash at irregular intervals, which often leads to the database server crashing while it's writing to a table, causing corruption.

As this is a difficult bug to track down, I ask that you be patient in the coming days as I try to get to the bottom of it. I will be regularly monitoring error e-mails so I can get to any corruption and crashes as quickly as possible, however we may still have periods of downtime, both due to the fact that it sometimes takes a little while to repair the damage, and also the fact that I have to sleep and work and do other things.

Thank you for your continued patience.

So what is actually happening? Repair and then upgrade or just repair?

The goal is still to upgrade, but at the moment it's taking a lower priority to fixing this, otherwise we'll keep having problems even after upgrading.

We expect 24/7 monitoring, come on! :bailey:

Actually, you've been amazingly on top of this, brief glitches for a while is something we can survive if longer term stability follows.

Well thankfully it hasn't happened while I've been asleep, and I tend to spend a lot of time at my desk (working from home and all).

Have you guys looked into switching to XenForo or Invision? They both allow you to upgrade from vB, and were developed by folks who used to work for vB and got pissed off at how bad vB 4 sucked ass. Both are said to be a huge improvement over vB in a number of areas. There's another message board company out there that was started by ex-vBers that's also highly rated, but I can't remember the name of the company. There's also some open source replacements that are free (no idea of how well they work, though).

Didn't we used to have invision for the first board?

    XenForo FTW. It's far superior.

Have you tried reversing the polarity of the warp plasma injectors? This always seem to fix everything, in my experience.

I think we did, which is why we all have 2004 join dates, rather than 2003. Aurora can confirm.

An upgrade will fix everything :bergman:

Seriously though, thank you for dealing with this and sorting it out. It IS nice to have something be done about it.

Hmmm, the good news is there have been no errors reported since I upgraded the database earlier.

Be honest... It was the warp injectors, right?

Did you remodulate it first? Or reverse the polarity?

Most of the time when I click thread titles, it goes to an empty area that says it's an invalid thread.

    Randomly, sometimes it's fine.

    Weird!

Most of the time, when I click thread titles, it goes to the thread. I have hardly had any problems.

I'm guessing that the board hates you and is purposely picking on you because of all the evil things you do.

If you want the board to work right, you must repent! :Pope:

Right now the POST table is currently marked as crashed, however this can sometimes just be a result of too many people accessing the table at once. Please let me know if you encounter any issues, I hope to avoid taking the board down to repair it until later tonight.

While I've yet to trace what is causing the database server to shutdown at random, I've ensured that we will now have automated daily database backups going forward in the event of any major corruption. Next step will be to add automated daily downloads of the backups to my machine to have offsite backups.
