It's time for the Doctor and Martha to say goodbye... but will an experiment that could change what it means to be human pull them back together? Mark Gatiss, playing Lazarus, is well-known to Brits from The League of Gentlemen and also wrote two episodes of New Who - The Unquiet Dead and The Idiot's Lantern. And he'd like to play the Doctor, as he never fails to mention when interviewed. He gets close tonight - or am I the only one who thinks Lazarus looks a bit like the First Doctor?
Also, don't forget we've been promised "something special" after this episode to make up for the delay of the next ep due to the Eurovision Song Contest.
it was a good enough ep, although gatiss' character started to turn into hillary briss towards the end. and its set-up the saxon storyline quite well
Mr Saxon knows the doctor as well from that his henchman said to Martha mother. Oh and the preview for the next ep. http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/...checkedMedia=asx&subtitles=hide&alreadySeen=1 Oh and captain jack!
The confrontation between the Doctor and Lazarus in the church was very good, a man who knows what a curse long life can be trying to persuade someone out of extending theirs. Martha was back to being a scientist again, and looking lovely in that dress. Her sister's a bit of alright too, and one of my workmates knows the girl who plays her! I liked her put-down line to the creepy old perv version of Lazarus as well: "Mmm... what is that perfume, my dear?" "Soap!" And someone is briefing Martha's family against the Doc...
Good episode, but I can't help thinking that if any actor had to spend several scenes naked, it't a pity it was Mark Gatiss...
Never mind, there's still that scene with the Doctor and Martha squished up inside the machine to go with...
Hey, Captain Jack in the preview. I wonder if this is going to be a version of him from before or after he encountered the Doctor in the first season? If it's a version from after that I want a comment about the fact he got stranded in the future.
I couldn't believe how little she was in it, and I was totally freaked out by her snog with Mark Gatiss... Oh, and I didn't realise the Doctor was a Spinal Tap fan, either.
Well, at least that made more sense than Martha's sister going after him later on, even if it did lead to a wonderful exchange after he transformed into the big 'orrible beastie: "Are you okay?" "I was gonna snog him!"
Yay! It's one higher than 10! The snog was pretty cringe worthy, and lasted FAR too long! There wasn't any Mavis/Gatiss tongue swapping though, to be fair. It could have been worse. And I'll leave you with that thought.
This season has been so much better. I don't know if it is because the writers are getting the feel of Tennant's Doctor or because Rose isn't there pining for the Doctor.
Tennant has toned down the slightly OTT nature of the Tenth Doctor this series, largely due to the Rose-moping. But then Series 2 Doc was written as being filled with a new sense of childlike glee, which bounced off Rose and ended up... a bit much. I love DT's portrayal, but there were times the Doc should have had the sense to rein it in and didn't, and look what that got him - Torchwood and the loss of his playmate. Series 3 also has a sense of "torture the Doctor" to it. He's nearly died two or three times already, found out he might not be the Last of the Time Lords (even if he dismissed Boe's message), been forced to open up about his past to Martha, faced the Daleks again and knows he still hasn't defeated them and - holy crap... the shit he's gotta go through before the series is over?!
Uhm, I can't really tell you how I know it's true. But er, trust me, you'll love it I know quite a few things, like all the stories for season 4 were locked in months ago and Season 5 is already penciled in (no dates confirmed for it though)
Then at least PM me and let me know how long DT is staying on the show... please (does that Puss in Boots thing from Shrek 2)?
Has anyone ever tried to work out how the Time War worked? Fathers day told us that the Doctor could go back and change it if he really wanted, but that the consequences of doing so would just make things even worse. That implies that it's not like all the Time Lords were wiped from history. But at the same time he seems to be surprised whenever Daleks show up anywhere in history and believes he will never encounter another Time Lord.
Whatever happened in the Last Great Time War must have spanned all ages. Stories such as "Father's day" show that the universe is, kind of, on two time axes: One that separates BC from AD from New New Earth, and another that tracks changes to that first timeline. The TARDIS apparently only travels on the first axis, while the whole universe including the first axis is "now" at a point on the second axis where Gallifrey and (most of) the Daleks are gone from BC, AD, New New Earth and every other period. Which is astoundingly similar to the chronotope of Hellenistic adventure stories according to Bakhtin.
That's just it, if they have been removed from all time periods, then why are there still records of them? For example the episode where they went to the end of the Earth. Can't remember the name but it had the tree woman. She knew of the Time Lords (and was surprised to find out any were still around) That means that at some point in the past of that timeline her society had interactions with them, or records of others interactions with them. So if the Tardis went back to that point what would be seen? Of course, I'm sure you're not meant to think about it too much and if anyone in the show raised this point they would just get chided for thinking far too four dimensionally.
