Yes, I have no patience. Has anyone else seen the leaked screening copy of this? It's in black and white and sans CGI, but still really, really watchable. I won't say much except that it is very, very good and some things are a bit aggravating...but way more good than bad. High, high hopes for Capaldi's run!
everything I've seen about this excites me and I'm very excited for the new season but I have NOT seen the episode you refer to an as a friend you really ought to do something about that (hint hint)
I'm very, very tempted, but if it's b/w and without effects -- I think I can wait. I think. Anyway, the trailer looks great. And the last two episodes were back to Moffat's old standards and more than that, so I'm cautiously optimistic. (I still haven't understood what happened at Lake Silencio. )
^well, one of them was up to old standards. Day of the Doctor was brilliant, whilst The Time of the Doctor was great right up until Magic Glowy Effect gave him a pile of other regenerations and made Time Lords into re-usable suicide bombers. I have high hopes for this season though, we're getting a grumpy Doctor with an edge, I just hope the stories do it justice.
Haven't watched the first episode, the second has leaked however (in the same incomplete state) and I caved. It's fantastic.
I saw the first leaked copy and loved it. Didn't know about the second one. I'll bet bricks are being shat at the BBC.
I've been watching the specials about the companions. Helps fill the void. Also will be watching their series on the real history of science fiction.
Nice to see some familiar faces, and I'm mad about Capaldi, so I'll rewatch it when the finished product airs.
The dinosaur was a bit over the top, but that was better than most of the stuff from Matt Smith's last season or two. The new intro is going to take some getting used to. But the most important thing is that Capaldi was pretty damn good.
The only real critique I have is that Capaldi didn't have "the moment" where he truly becomes the Doctor. In The Eleventh Hour, Matt Smith got that one moment. When he called the Atraxi back and he was on the rooftop of the hospital. I loved Tennant. He is still my favorite Doctor. But, I knew everything was going to be okay after that moment on the rooftop. I wish Capaldi had been given a similar moment because he really and truly would have shined.
My complaint too. He was in post-regeneration confuzzlement almost the whole time, so you don't get to see his Doctor-ness shine until next fucking episode. And some fans are saying "he IS the Doctor! ". Um...when, exactly?
I think I liked maybe the last 10 minutes or so of this episode. Every other part of it royally sucked. First episode of new-Who that I pretty much despised.
I love it to bits. Characters, dialogue, plot, acting, madness, reflections, all there. And I think it's pretty much the point that this Doctor hasn't had a moment yet where he's recognizing himself as the Doctor, desperate then at least for Clara to recognize him. He's still looking, and that's a story I'm interested in. Loved the new intro sequence. Hoping Missy will be a better arc than the Silents mess, but fine so far. Don't know why Clara wouldn't say Geronimo about ten minutes earlier into that situation, but that's a minor plot hole for a Moffat script.
Pretty good episode. There were some false trails as to how this new season would play out, some of the thematic/parallel stuff that I'm always a sucker for, Clara finally gets some proper characterization where I can reach it, some good lines, great acting, and "fine dining" can now be added to the list of things that Doctor Who has scarred a generation on for life. A Dalek wizard did it.
just remember, the previous Doctor was both at the end of his regeneration cycle and at the end of the lifespan of his last regeneration. The Smith Doctor was about to die of old age. So getting a new set of regenerations would be a huge shock to the system which is why the Capaldi Doctor was so wibbly-wobbly for so much of the episode.
I forgot to mention that there were several scenes that looked blue-screened to me. Not even super action shots, just the Doctor at street level with buildings behind him. Probably I'll watch it again and wonder which scenes seemed off to me, but
I am starting to detest the formulaic nature of these post-regeneration episodes. I don't want to see the Doctor stumble around like a babbling jackass for seven-eighths of the episode only to figure out who he is in the last six minutes and then suddenly solve the crisis at hand. I understand that it's established that the Doctor has some confusion and needs to figure things out a little after regeneration, but it gets stupider and stupider with each incarnation. Plus, if I never see Vastra, Jenny, and Strax again I will be a happy man indeed.
I noticed an article the other day on io9 that said the new intro is actually a jazzed up version of a fan created video that the BBC got permission to use, which is pretty darn cool in my opinion. Also,, I got aside the actor playing the half face bad guy was very good.
Yeah, I got that. They could have just have easily gone "...and a week later...", and gotten down to business.
Hate both the new intro sequence AND the new arrangement of the theme tune. Yes, Series 8 is making me very unhappy so far.
from about 34 minutes in, actually. From the time he shows up at the restaurant, the preponderance of the rest of the episode he's the Doctor. Not without eccentricities (which is of course a function of being the Doctor) naturally, and still exhibiting memory gaps in… But not at all the crazy man seen in the first half of the episode.
I think that the "Doctor" moment happened when Clara confronts the robot and says the Doctor has always had her back. She extends her hand behind herself, without turning around, and then out of the blue the Doctor grabs it.
How big was that dinosaur? T Rex was only a couple stories tall. I thought the two chicks and a potato were poorly used. And for some reason Doctor Who on my surround sound is all music and noise and I can't hear the dialogue. I have to remember to watch on a different TV. Otherwise, I enjoyed it, and look forward to the change in tone. Oh, and I can't wait for Moffat to paint himself into a huge corner and pull it out with Magic.
The gears at the start felt a bit much, but the rest was fun. Is this series going to be more steampunk? Still better than the cheese of the TARDIS opening up to reveal the first scene, though, right?
