Most of these European invaders weren't even real refugees. They were economic migrants. Some were even criminals! Their home countries didn't want them around. And of course they never assimilated. They didn't even bother to learn the language.

He adopted the name while at college in the 1920's when he got banned from all extracurricular activities for getting caught drinking in a dorm room with friends (this was during prohibition when this was actually a crime). He had been active in the University newspaper and wanted to keep writing despite the ban so he created the pen name of Dr. Seuss. So his use predated anything to do with the Nazis.

My maternal grandmother's family settled in Pennsylvannia from Germany in the 1750's. They'd had the name Schmidt for as long as anyone could remember. In 1917, they changed it to Smith.
