I forget who had the link, but there's an ebook out there about how fucked the production of INS was. It started out as a Trek version of Heart of Darkness, and turned into... whatever it was that we got.

That was because both Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner had too much clout over the script. The original version was going to be dark and brooding, but Stewart wanted to do a light romp instead. So what we got was a terrible TNG episode.

I have a copy of Michael Piller's ebook "Fade In." I haven't read the whole thing yet so he hasn't yet explained the sucking.

Honestly, even if he'd gotten to do what he wanted to do, it still would have been insufferable and sucked. The major flaw of the story is the idea of "rural simplicity" and why Picard suddenly decides to take a stand against the Federation when he wants to get laid, yet didn't when it came to all those planets given away in a treaty, and actively fought against the Maquis in the name of a treaty that failed in the end anyway. And the whole new-age elf thing just has a way of getting under my skin the same way early TNG did anyway. :garamet:

I think humans, elves, dwarves, halflings >>> humans, Vulcans, Klingons, and Ferengi anyday, but that's a topic for another day.

I'm referring to how the Baku were basically elves and far too perfect.
